I like this idea, there are other forums that have server-related chat but it's between corporate IT guys, not enthusiasts.

I think it would be quite useful. I've seen some deals on SuperMicro and HP servers that could be used as crunchers for WCG. But I'd like to know if any one has had experience with using Linux on them so I could save some $$. Not only that but I'd like to get some LGA771 chips to upgrade for a more crunchworthy machine and any input would be appreciated, as I am completely unfamiliar with Socket 771 and seating chips.

I use the term server loosely.

most crunchers are servers, nas, file server etc anything that is not a main rig mostly

Excellent idea. Could be a good place to talk about related software as well incl. operating systems and virtualization, etc.

As for water-cooling one it ain't 4U but my present server is my old i7 870/P55 FTW rig in which I kept the CPU loop (added an IBM M1015, Intel NIC and lots of drives).

Just getting started with it really; only CentOS on it at present. Eventually will start to play with ESXi and/or HyperV. Also considering a A6-5400K on that Asrock mini-itx FM2 board with 7 SATA ports (have all the other parts already) for a dedicated lower-power domain controller and DNS box (at least at first and I know could just virtualize all that too; maybe then try out IPFire router or some such on it later and ultimately use it a NAS build).

Let me guess, you got your hands on the new 15 core E7 chip. Come on, spit it out, make us all drool in envy.

Good idea on a dedicated forum. My piddly dual X5670's may learn something.
