seems like my current main rig is going to be my very first pc lasting for more than 2 years :O
tbh i have to thank AMD for their new slightly less aggressive roadmap- it really cured my hardware addiction

Basically no new architecture for 7700 and above for desktop and the only new product getting released this year are based on Oland which is slower in performance than the 7700 series.
A desktop version of this chip will probably happen as the 8600 or 8500 series, but nothing faster than tahiti should be coming out.
The bright side for AMD is it appears to 7900 is selling comparatively well compared to earlier months because of the game bundle and drivers.
However there is a bit more going on for the mobile side but not particularly for the enthusiast. The only thing that looks interesting but fishy is the new 8800m part which looks slower than the 7800 part for some reason based on the positioning on their roadmap chart.

No point, the partners have that base covered. If AMD released one officially it would only serve to lower the price of their partners cards which would piss them off. In addition, the 7970 isn't meant for a dual reference card normally. Look at how much power consumption some of these cards consume and this should be obvious.
Plus it so low volume it would not be worth it particularly.
I think something resembling a reference design as far as clocks go, would be far to close to performance to Titan and a reference 7990 would lose that sales battle because of namesake and the desirability of a single GPU, even if it is the slower card by a little.
As long as the card is sound, I don't mind the leaving it to the partners approach. It usually allows for more overclocking headroom which AMD has been friendlier about.
However, there is one negative of not having a reference design and that being that only reference designs get waterblocks made for them. You have options to buy over priced cards like ares with the blocks built on them, but we know the cost associated with that.

AMD should launch a top-to-bottom 8000 series using existing GPU for retail parts as well as OEM parts.
Could use the opportunity to tidy up their naming scheme as well. (see 7870xt)
Dual Tahiti should be a 89xx
Tahiti a 88xx
Pitcairn a 87xx
etc.
The naming scheme for the 7xxx series was thrown off almost immediately by the GHz and boost editions.
Simplify the line-up, moving the products down a rung and run at clockspeeds better optimised for the current yields (which would likely mean small speed boosts)
A 88xx (79xx) would be a reasonable boost over a 78xx, as much as a mild refresh would be, so it's not just changing the first number of a product and hoping you could fool the average consumer.
You think they should do a rebrand of their whole line up to trick shoppers into "upgrading"?
Intel 990x/Corsair H80 /Asus Rampage III
Coolermaster HAF932 case
Patriot 3 X 2GB
EVGA GTX Titan SC
Dell 3008
If you read what I wrote you'd see I expressed quite the opposite. Any like for like comparison x9x0 to x9x0 or x8x0 to x8x0 would be an upgrade on the level equivilent to a new product line, albeit using existing GPU's.
The only people that would be confused are the people who would buy a 6450 over a 5870 anyway.
Oh I just heard, the 9600xt is coming out, agp btw...
Sorry I couldn't help it.
AMD Reiterates 2013 GPU Plans
Article from yesterday, 2/15/13
The slide stated, to the amazement of many, that AMD?s product lineup would be ?stable throughout 2013?. And although that slide is technically correct, how it?s been interpreted has spawned quite a bit of ballyhoo. It?s this ballyhoo that AMD wants to clear up, hence today?s call.AMD later confirmed what was what in the 8000M series; the 8500M, 8600M, and 8700M parts were all based on a new GCN GPU codenamed Mars, which was part of AMD?s GCN-based Solar Systems family. AMD at the time also stated that they will be introducing new 8000M parts in Q2 of this year, in the process implying that these will be products based on new GPUs in the Solar Systems family.
So basically...technically, yes they will continue with the 7000 series this year, but will introduce 8000 series to varying degrees, I know some it has been sort of discussed, but it has been clarified.
