Yeah those MSI boards were notorious for dying when the slightest drip of water hit the VRM's. The OC knob was a nice feature, kinda like the OC key feature the Crosshair III Formula had. I think you've pretty much convinced us and yourself the Asrock board isn't the one.

I think you'd best return the board to your friend and get yourself something decent but if you can get the Asrock to run i'd love to see of course.

I've just ordered a 1244 CPU, if all goes to plan it should be here tomorrow. There's plenty of cold weather forecast so that will give me some time to play with it in the cold.

Now let's hope i will finally get a decent one, the last decent AMD CPU i've had must have been my Opteron 146, about 8 years ago i think, after that the Conroe era started. Never been real luck with Deneb, Thuban and Bulldozer so i think it's my turn for a nice one now. Fingers crossed.

Fingers crossed for your 1244. Meanwhile I emailed Asus asking if they can lend me a ASUS Crosshair V Formula (Z), so I can check what it can do and cannot do. Otherwise I will be spending another 200 Euro for the third 990FX board within a month

Good thing and very ironic my main reason to go with Bulldozer was it being cheap xD 400 Euro in MBs aint exactly cheap, but then again when are things ever working out as planned? Would be too damn boring if they would

    Little update on my side:
    - ASRock 990FX Extreme3: still not overclocking Bus Speed by a mere 1 MHz (never ever seen something like that). I downgraded every available UEFI version from 1.50 down to 1.20 without any changes (except renamed settings, but same OC behaviour). Now there is only the 1.00 version left for me to try until I use the board as, hmm good question, cant think of any use for it at all, not aerodynamic enough for a frisbee, to weak to be used as a hammer and too ugly for any kind of decoration.

    - Asus sends me a Asus Crosshair V Formula-Z (HUGE thanks to Asus Germany). So I will finally have a decent AM3+ board, with which I can focus on the overclocking part, and not on the voodoo dances + constant prayers

    - AMD sent a FX-8300 (95W) on the way - for AMD Germany - you are the best!

    9 GHz, here I come

Will be interesting to see how my FX-8300 compares to your FX-8350 batch 1244 - but, no worries, I will start my own thread for the new CPU

I called a shop and asked them if they had any with week 1244 code. They had 3 CPU's in stock, two of them being week 1244PGT the third was 1236. I chose the 1244PGN with the lowest number: 395, the other one was 400+, don't remember the exact number.

    So, there you have it:

    Like brothers.

This is the one i sold:

And this is the new one:

Now, for anyone thinking week 1244 are great, i've got some bad news....The new CPU is even worse!! Where the 1236 needed 1.475V for 4.7GHz IBT, this one needs 1.4875V!

CPU-NB seems slightly better, the old one needed 1.275V for 2.6GHz, this one does 2.6GHz with 1.225V.

The bright side is that this one can run Cinebench at 100MHz higher than my old CPU with normal ambient temps:

My old CPU could barely do this at 5.1GHz.

nice, this looks good for daily use. As Stilt said, usually FX-8xxx had some worse modules than other modules. But I believe, this one could be good for LN2 validation

    Hi Zeus,

can you try with these settings, just reduce the multiplier

    Multiplier: 16

    Hi Mongoled,

Tried your settings but i kept getting Qcode C5. Now i searched the manual to see what that means...guess what? C5 is not even in the manual, lol!

Tried to boot at 300 FSB, same thing. 275 did boot but i couldn't get any better clocks out if.

Do you realize with 1.55V and LLC set to Ultra High, you are actually feeding the CPU 1.61V under load? To me that is a bit much for 24/7 operation.

Today i took my EK Supremacy CPU block out and exchanged it for an XSPC Raystorm. This block seems to do rather well. I had to take the EK block out for RMA, it has a real bad form of corrosion on the microchannels. No idea what caused this, i actually though the corrosion problems with Nickel plated EK blocks were over but appearently not.

Anyway, tried to get a feel for this chip as i want to bench outside with it tonight so gave it another spin and managed to break 9 points Cinebench 11.5 at normal ambient temps. Now if this chip will bench another 150-200MHz higher in -4C i will be happy.

    Fingers crossed for tonight.

Well George, forcast says it will be somewhere in between -3 and -7C tonight, in the part of my country it will be closer to -3C though. I will have the system outside and the keyboard, mouse and screen inside with the cables trapped between te door.

I'm not gonna sit outside for hours on end if i can do it this way. My wife thinks i'm nuts but she's getting used to it. Fingers crossed for a 5.4GHz CB run.

Oh i measured my watertemp going up by 1.2?C by just running one single CineBench run! It actually takes a couple of minutes to cool down again to the starting temp. How bizarre!

OK, this is my first ever posting of a CB score

Ambients are 20C (Cyprus), closed case, my work rig

This is probably the limit with the cooling I am currently using, will be replacing the Apogee XT with a XSPC Raystorm which should increase flow so will rebench when that has arrived.

Good luck for those who will be on cold runs, wont get that chance here, lol

Yes I know about the LLC!

As long as the temps are OK, I dont mind the voltage (not sure abt the CPU, hahaha)

Dont know why you cant run high fsb, it was another peeps with a 1244 CPU who I saw running high fsb, so thought I would give mine a go.

I know in IBT using the correct AVX the scores are alot higher than using a default fsb, 88,000 vs 108,000 or so.

Dont know if that equates to anything in CB.

Glad to hear the Raystorm is doing better, looking forward to receiving mine some time next week.

I think you will achieve your goals

Just tried where it boots FSB wise: <285MHz. It booted at 280MHz but bluescreened before it hit the desktop. I tried to stabilize 275MHz but 270Mhz was the best it could run IBT. Didn't notice any difference in Gflops though.

Pretty sure this FSB thing must be bios related. If there isn't a new bios due out soon i might roll back on an older one with this bios flashback function, just to see if that helps.

I also noticed that running Prime or IBT at 4.8GHz or higher simply locks the system up instead of giving errors. Have to spend more time to investigate all this.

Ps The Raystorm is a lovely block, can't say if it performs better than the EK Supremacy but definately not worse either. I have changed the blue 3mm leds for red ones to suit the colorscheme of my rig and i have to say i love it. Pretty sure you won't regretting buying that block.

edit: what the heck, why not add a picture?

Pic doesn't really do it justice but you get the idea.

Ok, just went through my last beer so i guess it's time to hit the sack. But not before i've shared this. Temps outside tonight were not as cold as i hoped, just -1.2?C but still i managed to get a pretty decent result.

    Here's Cinebench at 5.5GHz:

Curious to see what the chip will do at colder temps. Expecting to bench at ~5.4G tonight, 5.5G was a welcome surprise.

Pete, let's do some AMD next time man!

aww, impressive result with "JUST" cold air and nothing more fancy!! Now I would love to know what that CPU could get to on LN2 with 1.9V

Zeus: could you try for me Cinebench R10 score and after CInebench R11.5 for one core (at around 5500)? Thank you very much!

    Thanks guys.

Now 5.5G might look pretty impressive but i'm positive this CPU is still just middle of the road, nothing special.

A good CPU will do at least a 100MHz more, perhaps 150MHz more. I think Dr_Swizz already proved this point.

Don't know if i'm gonna try for a third one yet, i have to see if i can sell this one at a decent price first.

Pete, i would love to bench AMD under LN2 but the thought of ripping the board out of the case and insulate it doesn't sound really appealing to me.

Maybe i'll have to get something else instead, just for LN2 benching.

    Very nice CB score!
It looks like God answered our prayers and you got exactly the kind of chip you wanted.
I think you are being a bit too modest though, your chip is indeed better than mine.

You could always buy a Sabertooth board for your LN2 benchmarking. I have one of those and I think it is a quite capable board that gives you good value for your money.
