    possibly getting a mobo. 2011 or 1155 ivy?

    do i really want to pick up a six core sandy at this point or a 4 core ivy?

    i realize the 4 extra threads would be better but what do you guys think?

    I voted for the 1155 Ivy. I have only used 1156 and 1155 systems for crunching. But from what I have read here these are much more energy efficient. (that is some thing I need with the energy prices here)
    And looking at the price difference for both the CPU and mobo, you can about build 2 1155 systems.

    this will be my main rig and will be getting stuff in trades and used. so not really retail prices.

    but i kinda like the idea of 12 threads crunching away in a super small case with matx board

    If the money is not really the issue then I would go 2011 ... gets you hex to play with, more fun with quad channel mem, more lanes for PCIE ... so in this case bigger is better

    I would go hex with at least a 3 pci-e slot mobo with hopes for more gpu expansion on the grid, but thats just my opinion

    I've been meaning to ask this question but, never seem to get around to it....so I'll hi-jack this thread

    How many threads each are you guys running that have multiple gpus? With what card and cpu combinations?

    If one only has 8 or 12 cpu threads to play with, and the video card can easily run 8 to 12 each (or even double that), wouldn't there be a major deficiency in available cpu power if you're running 3 7970's with 8 threads each? At what point does production become counter-productive?

    Sorry for the hi-jack, but it could sway the OP one way or another, depending on future plans/needs.

    Yeah, I am wondering the same. My 3770K at 4.7 is barely able too feed this single HD7970, so adding multiple cards seems not very efficient. Maybe a 6 core with HT at high frequency would work, but 3 cards seems impossible.

    Not to thread jack but on my 990x rig with 3 7950's I began with 8 w/u per card for 24 concurrent tasks and .5 on the CPU. I thought this was a little much for the CPU and it stayed at 100% too much for my liking. When I dropped it down to 6 per gpu I dropped down below 2 mill wcg so I bumped it back up to 8 and it is now it is climbing back up again.

    its going in this case so im guessing its not going to have that many gpu, appart from the fact that i could never afford more than 1 of the gpu that would be worth crunching with..

    My vote went with 2011 although it is often cheaper to set up a 1155 rig.

    2011 will still be current next year so provided that bioses are available you may be able to get a cpu that is current at that time meanwhile perhaps I could tempt you with something like this:

    this is a great deal. its as fast as an oced sandy and only 95 w. and server procs dont wear out at all. so way to go.

    doesnt look like i will be doing 2011, thought i found somone that would trade their asus rampage iv gene for my custom powdercoated lian li but he decided to keep the case, apart from that i doubt i could afford a 2011..

    we will see, ivy 1155 is looking more and more like the more appropriate cpu for my shallow pocketbook.

    Little late to the party but my 2cents would be to wait for haswell unless you have pressing need for something sooner. It's close enough that if you're like me you may end up regretting not waiting bit longer.
