    Probably a stupid question but

I'm running a Radeon 5850 and I want to buy a Radeon 7970... could i install them both on the motherboard and it will work?

Would be mainly for crunching... (yeah I know the answer is probably no but a guy can dream? )

I never tried mixing different gen ATI cards but I do recall its doable, or was at least.

I doubt it will work for CFX ( need be same gen ) .. now for pure crunching, i dont know. Normally, cards are seen as separate and work on their own no ?

The same gen thing as far as I recall is only true for nvidia cards. Last I heard ATI cards were happy to be mixed.

Yeah I looked but I figured it would be way faster and be sure of the validity of the answer if one of the very talented people around here answered instead of some random guy on a forum post written a year ago.

Now, would a HD4850 and a HD5850 work? Or is the HD4850 too old?

you can take any 2 cards on windows 7 and it will work, CCC (or whatever it is called now) will only work with the hd5 as you need the legacy driver for the hd4 card. also no xfire.
