Basically, it's been done every year or so. Remember the HD 7000-series OEM? Mostly HD 6000-series rebrands. No one was really up in arms over it since AMD did it really quiet-like.
This is different.. the lower end cards akways get rebranded. The high-end was all new 79xxx in this case everything gets pushed up.

The 7970 -- now with 1Ghz bios turned on! the 7970 was a great investment!! I have 2013s high end card already

    super re-badge time!!!

The only issue I can come up with for now is fleabay, well that and consumer confusion. There's potential for fraud to take place where they put full 8000 specs onto OEM cards and rake in the profits. Be rather funny if AMD pulls out a new technology for the 8000 series but none of the OEM cards can do it, despite being labeled as 8000 series.

I think one more bad thing about this is people who are getting a 7970 ghz edition vs a 8970, will more than likely get a 8970 with the stock cooler(OEM). The take away message from most ghz reviews are although the performance is good, don't get one with a stock cooler as it is too loud(possibly louder than a gtx 480) and too hot. Considering that most consumers buying these machines are not the type to overclock or mess around, the 8970 will be the loudest component in their system by far and they will mind it.

Unless AMD changes the cooler which is unlikely for an OEM card, people are better off getting the old 7970 ghz editions for the better cooler that comes with most and the free games included.

It is different in a way. The only cards that weren't rebranded HD 6000-series cards were the HD 79xx series simply because the HD 79xx products only became available to OEMs quite late. From the HD 78xx on down, it was all rebrands initially.

The OEM cards won't be the same as the retail cards. Don't get all upset, folks; you're going to see GCN 2.0 desktop cards.
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

if amd is sure gcn 2.0 will take the performance crown at this new gen then they may want to wait for nvidia release. also making better drivers after a long time of release is not that effective for them. maybe they just want to spend their time to make as perfect driver as possible before nvidia release. also do anybody knows when 12.11 will be released? a very long time for being beta i think and 12.11 beta11 is a very good candidate.

AFAIK AMD are rebuilding the drivers to get the most out of GCN, hence the long silence. I expect the next official WHQL driver will be 13.1 (13.0 being a beta with most GCN optimisations)

Heh, apparently you can get a "Professional" subscription to Charlie's work for a mere $100/month, discounted to a low low $1,000 if you pay for the whole year. But wait, there's more! If you can't shell out a grand for access, you can pay $20/month for the privilege of seeing it a week later than the suckers that'll pay $100/month.

    Wow.
