In my case yes cause I went from 3870 to 7970 it was a massive upgrade..

We are completely at the mercy of AMD, cause all news suggest that the 8970 is quite ready for production so any delays will be purely AMD's strategic decision. One could only guess when it will come out..

If sales are indeed still very good they might want to wait for good drivers as cards are mostly only reviewed when they are put on the market. If a product has bad drivers at launch it will echo until the product life cycle ends, and if they are still making money on 7xxx then its win win for them?

seems like amd has some serious margins and sales on the hd7xxx series so they might even skip sea islands and release an even more powerful reworked architecture as a replacement

It's not BS though. AMD's actions are telling us a launch is further away.

I.e The marketing blitz recently appears to be promoting the 7 series for the the long term. When have you seen such a marketing effort more than 1 year after a card has come out? Never.

The refreshing of the game bundles which is pretty costly, makes more sense to pack with the new cards than old cards. If the 8xxx series was coming out really that soon, it would make more sense to pack it with their new cards at high margins. I.e A 2-3 games bundle to make people swallow the 500+ dollar or so price tag and actually make money off the cards. How much money can AMD be making giving away such game bundle when these cards are so cheap( only 7970 is 350 dollars, a 7950 is 280 dollars, 7850 at 150 dollars and a 7870 is 200 dollars street price.) It doesn't make sense for AMD to make people jump on the 7xxx series so soon, when they could sell a 8xxx series to them in a couple of months. A 7xxx sale this late in the game is a lost 8xxx series sale.

This marketing move is basically an long term effort to fend off Nvidia because AMD isn't launching anything new.

Also the OEM rebranding doesn't make sense if the 8xxx series is launching within the next few months. The competition doesn't have new cards out so I doubt the OEMs are really that dying for it. However, tell them your not launching anything new for 9-12 months and the tune changes.

This is all on top of AMD directly saying it.

A more interesting topic to speculate about is (imo) why they aren't launching the new cards any time soon?
It is not like 7000 series are an incredible success and are massively outselling Nvidia's offers.

Budget cutbacks I can imagine into R and D. Discrete cards are a shrinking market and at the same time, its getting more and more expensive to develop them.

In addition AMD was punished for releasing hardware early. I think they learned a lesson.

    Because they can't. Simple.

Yep, I'm really going to believe some one from marketing posting info on twitter rather than statements made by higherups to investors...

What are you talking about? The 4Gamer site linked above conducted an interview with Devon Nekechuk where he said their focus for 2013 will remain on the HD 7000-series. In the Graphics Product Group, it doesn't get any more knowledgeable than Devon.

Unless 4gamer made up that whole interview (which I doubt), I think your are in denial.

Or there is more to the story than some are letting on... Has nothing to do with denial.

    Nobody knows yet.

but if it comes out this year most likely still on 28nm and probably refined GCN arch. With HSA support I think.

The more long in the tooth they are about HD 7000 series they are gonna have to switch to 20 or 14nm process at some point.

Global Foundries new 20/14nm process looks promising by doubt it will be ready in time or for gpus.

    Whats tsmc next process? 20nm?

    Yup.

How about some Radeon 7000-series 20nm *pipe-cleaners* this Fall and full-series 20nm desktop Sea Islands in Q1-14?

I wouldn't read into that at all. Most likely the AMD bundles are making people order those like crazy.

I know the head of cs at ncix.us and he's telling me they can't even keep certain models of 7x's in stock due to the combination of rebates, AMD bundles etc. It's not Newegg or Amazon granted but it's a testament to how fast some of these cards are flying off the shelves.
