    Question GPU Quandries

So I got that Asus 7870 all installed and followed all the advise I found and I had it running 8 WUs and then the video drivers crash. I'm on W8 so of course that reg setting Bun-Bun posted doesn't exist. I tried knocking the running WUs down to 4, tried not running the latest beta drivers and back to release video drivers and same issue.

    System:
    W8
    BOINC: 7.0.38
Video: Asus 7870 with CCC 12.11 Beta8 at first then rolled back to 12.10
    CPU: 2600k @ stock

Running GPUz and I see the GPU load go up to about 6% before the drivers crash. Any suggestions?

Is this a fresh install of your OS? If not, maybe a fresh instal will help.

Secondly does it crash right away? If it doesn't, it could be an issue with 2d/3d clocks switching. If it is that I suggest making your 2d clocks the same as your 3d.

Hmm, I'm not really sure what the problem would be. Does furmark or other games run?

Try 12.11beta 4. If you're using CCC that could also be an issue on Win8. Do you get the driver has stopped responding message?

BF3 runs just fine on Ultra with no video drivers crashing.

I couldn't find that version on their site. Anyone have a direct DL?

edit: also its not a fresh install. W7 was running previously.

Also it crunches just fine with one WU at a time with no driver crashes.

The beta drivers do not work for Win 8. They cause nothing but computational errors. AMD site doesn't list beta drivers for win 8 when you search (yet it says win 8 in the description of them).

In order to get Windows 8 running properly I had to prevent windows from downloading and installing drivers automatically http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2500967

Use a driver cleaning program or manually delete all files pertaining to AMD graphics.

Completely disable UAC (the gui just disables notifications so use the following reg edit)

    Code:
    [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System]
    "EnableLUA"=dword:00000000
Then install the latest 12.10 AMD Drivers.

As far as I know the watchdog disable reg fix still applies to Win 8.

Since doing the watchdog reg fix, I can't get any version of the driver to install.

What do you mean? Do you get an error?

This is the error log at the end of the CCC installer. It does not install the actual driver. It installs CCC and everything but the driver is not getting installed.

I went to check the event viewer and stupid me I should have looked at all the messaged. There are some Imformationals in the System log that look like this:

I think this is the HDMI Audio driver:
    Code:
Driver Management has restricted the installation of Device Instance ID HDAUDIO\FUNC_01&VEN_1002&DEV_AA01&SUBSYS_00AA0100&REV_1003\5&3E38BEB&0&0001 because of a Device Installation Restriction policy setting.
I think this is the video card:
    Code:
Driver Management has restricted the installation of Device Instance ID PCI\VEN_1002&DEV_6818&SUBSYS_042F1043&REV_00\4&80E7924&0&0008 because of a Device Installation Restriction policy setting.
    Commencing a Google-down now

edit: Ah crap I think its this setting I set in gpedit.msc [ie. Local Security Policy]:
Prevent installation of devices not described by other policy settings

I can't remember where I saw that to set it but I did...I'm setting it to disabled, rebooting and cleaning up ATI. brb....

edit2: no luck. 12.10 driver still crashes on commencement of crunching.

Try uninstalling the 12.10 driver and run driver sweeper. Then try doing a custom install of the 12.11beta4. Install only the video driver and the APP SDK runtime. No CCC or any of the other stuff including the audio driver. See if that will stop the crashing.

    Retro77,

You likely know this already but just in case it slipped your mind: Insure that you run drive sweeper in "SAFE mode" if win 8 as such an option or its equivalent...

    I'll try that.

    I didn't know that

Running the Driver Sweeper in safe mode does provide more files to remove. But still no luck.

I've uninstalled, then booted into safe mode, drier sweepered, then booted up, installed just the driver and API, then the video crashes at about 11 seconds. I even tried installing the driver in the "Disable driver signing" mode that is also an option on the safe mode start up.

Mine wouldn't run multi error free until I disabled windows from automatically installing drivers from windows update and cleared the driver store. Now it's fine.

I had similar issues with Win 7 when it first came out. Will take a couple months for everything to get sorted out.

    Retro77,

The app_info file you posted @ # 18 shows a count of 1. You have 8 ATI hcc1 v 7.05 threads showing. 1 running and 7 waiting. Your actual app_info count set must be different, like 0.125?

Have you scrolled all the way down the tasks page of BOINC manager to see if there are possibly 7 other (higher priority) tasks running causing tthe waiting to run top display for 7 ATI WUs?

Do you get anything in the BOINC log referenccing the waiting to run status for the 7 ATI WUs?

I've disabled its ability to DL New drivers. I'll look into how to clean out the driver store as the driver sweeper doesmt seem to be doing it.

I had it set to .125 before. So the screen is showing those that it started.

So I uninstalled CCC 12.10; disabled installing of new drivers; rebooted into safe mode; used the pnputil -e command to list all installed driver packages; used the -f command to remove them; rebooted; enabled the installation of drivers; installed CCC 12.11 beta 8 dot net 4. I hadn't been running the dot net 4 package.

I am able to crunch 2 HCC GPU WUs and 6 DSFL WUs with this app_info:

    Code:

I tried upping the ATI count to .2 and it crashes the driver. Right now its crunching...CCC is showing the load at like 64%. GPU-Z doesn't see any load, sometimes 1%...I wonder if there is a diagnostic program I can run to see if the video card is messed up somehow.

    I used 12.11 beta 8 without .net4..

Doesn't matter if the driver installer has .net 4 or not, it (.net4) comes pre-installed with windows 8.
I quit fiddling around, i'm just going to grab a disk with windows 7, and back to 4 gpu threads on my 7750.

    Anyone seen this one before:
    Event ID 4109, Source Display:
Application wcg_hcc1_img_7 has been blocked from accessing Graphics hardware.
I'm not finding much online for it.
