    How long will HCC run?

I attempted to update a non GPU enabled client and got the messages below. Is this project only for GPU now, or are they out of work?

Nevermind! I finished up some WU's and was able to get some new work. Duh!

Still a valid question, here's how I see it:

So far HCC has run for about 5 years and is half way.
Because of the speed up in processing power, I'd think it would only last about 3.5-4 more years as it was.
With the new GPU app, we're chewing through the WUs much faster than before, say 1-2 years? Thoughts?

I think they will be making more GPU apps in the future for other projects, BUT will this happen before HCC runs dry? Will they stick with OpenCL? Will they fix these massively short WUs to give us more efficiency? There's a million unanswered questions that could have a huge impact on how long it takes to finish the project and how long GPUs will continue to run. Part we'll have to wait and see, but if you look at the forms and start collecting information, we might get a pretty good idea.

24 hour prime stable? Please, I'm 24/7/365 WCG stable!

The latest stats from Sekerob have just been released indicating 255 days remaining for Help Conquer Cancer based on current progress
If they release a Linux app quickly, then we might be looking at <200 days

I can't imagine WCG would support a project that is straight up CUDA or Stream. OpenCL probably will net better overall throughput than going one side or the other as they have a substantial cruncher base unlike smaller projects that get less attention anyway.

We are still assessing the impact of the acceleration on the end date of the HCC1 project. Our rough estimate with 'known' work based on this acceleration is about 100-130 days until end of project. BUT my use of the word 'known' simply means the number of batches we are aware to run. What we are are is not equal to what the researchers want to run so we are discussing this further with them at this time.

However, we do not yet have any research project beyond HCC1 that we know can run on a GPU. While this has definitely shown the power of GPU working well, for an application that clearly fits the profile of being suitable for GPU, the researchers are still the ones that provide the code and they will have to determine if GPU would work for their project and then make the modifications.

It is important to us to have GPU capable projects, but we cannot promise them. Even then, we could find ourselves with a project that was written for CUDA and not be able to run on AMD graphics cards (or written for AMD but not CUDA). As a result, we ask that people not make purchasing decision without understand these caveats.

Milkyway is the only one that I know of that uses DP. What are the others?

I highly recommend against purchasing a GTX 460 for crunching... severe limitation results in only 1/2 or 2/3 of shaders available to use (can't remember exactly)
    Main: i7-930 @ 2.8GHz HT on; 1x GIGABYTE GTX 660 Ti OC 100% GPUGrid
    2nd: i7-920 @ 2.66GHz HT off; 1x EVGA GTX 650 Ti SSC 100% GPUGrid
    3rd: i7-3770k @ 3.6GHz HT on, 3 threads GPUGrid CPU; 2x GIGABYTE GTX 660 Ti OC 100% GPUGrid
    Part-time: FX-4100 @ 3.6GHz, 2 threads GPUGrid CPU; 1x EVGA GTX 650 100% GPUGrid

That only applies to how the GPUGrid project is coded.

But for WCG he'd want an AMD card... so the reasons to do an NVIDIA card is 1) you got an incredible deal, or 2) you plan to join GPU grid if WCG runs out of WUs.

I guess I *assumed* everyone would follow the very narow context I was posting in ... which was that NVidia only utilizes a percentage of shaders. Overall for WCG you would absolutley want to go AMD ... I have a 7850 on the way to me right now

Is there a shortage of HCC AMD WUs? My HTPC is receiving work from other projects and no GPU WUs for HCC.

If you have 2 gpu projects attached to BOINC it could be a scheduling issue. I had that problem, even with the project at 0 resource share it would get work and pause the other GPU project. IMO best to stay with 1 active gpu project until the BOINC devs fix the issue.

Running a 4-GPU WU setup here on my 7970 and keep getting new WU's, got 4 in progress and 96 waiting. I'm not running CPU WU's tho.

It depends on which version of windows you're running and whether or not you used the defaults for the install folder.
The easiest way without listing all of the possibilities is to search for a folder named www.worldcommunitygrid.org. It will be a subfolder under projects.
