    Searching for a 5ghz 3770k at microcenter....when should I stop?

After getting fed up with my p8p67 WS revolution I decided to scrap my sandy bridge build and grab a Maximus V Extreme and 3770k. I'm dead set on 5ghz linx stable, and I have a decent XSPC water setup (though my Rasa block is kind of old). I know there's not much of a difference between 4.9 and 5ghz, but I just want 5ghz.

Since I get get the 3770k's at Microcenter for so cheap, I only lose a few bucks ebaying them. Thus, I don't have a problem buying and selling until I find a good chip.

But here's the thing - I plan on de-lidding whichever one I decide to keep, so once I do that I'm stuck with it. It seems like virtually no 3770k's do 5ghz without de-lidding due to heat. So far, the best one I've found does 4.8ghz linx stable, but with high 1.425v.

My question is, what are some good signs that a chip will do 5ghz when de-lidded under water? Should I look for something like 4.8ghz at 1.3v? 4.9ghz @ 1.4? I won't have a problem running up to 1.5v once it's de-lidded, but I'm not used to ivy bridge and just am having a really hard time testing high voltage clocks due to heat. I've been going over 100C past 1.45v in some cases.

I realize it's mostly luck, but what's your "gut feeling?"

you can go for batches 322x ,321x that have low voltage but nothing is sure in chips world

I bought 9(NINE) 3570K and only one of them would do 5 ghz with 1.45 for S-pi 32M,did not bother testing it with prime.Switched to 3770K and first one barely enters windows and runs spi 32M at 1.46(cold air).To get a 5 ghz lynx or prime stable chip without delliding it you have to be pretty lucky

Believe it or not, I just went to Microcenter again and was disappointed because they didn't have any 3770k's in the display case. The sales associate said he would go in back and check for me, and look what he handed me...about to test it but I have high hopes!

    It sucks

Needs 1.525v to even boot to windows at 5ghz. But what is weird is that it gives me memory management error BSOD below that; not the usual vcore BSOD's. I don't get it.....this is the worst chip I've tried yet.

Anything you'll need over 1.4V is too much for daily use imho. You might want to look in the for sale section, there's quite often 5GHz air/water cpu's for sale. My cpu runs 4.8G fully stable at 1.32V LLC at the strongest setting to minimize droop but needs at least 1.425V for 5G. Haven't tested for stabilty other than Spi 32M, 3D marks and Cinbebench 11.5 but i think it will run Prime.

Perfect! I told you! 322x 321x are good batches and have strong IMC

    Nice.

Looks like a great batch. My 3570k that I got at release is great at low voltage but barely does 5GHZ and it is delidded.

Might go to MC for Black Friday if they run a super hot deal on 3770k.

Good luck de-lidding your golden 3770k.

Thanks guys! Chip is delidded now and I'm 99% sure I can get at least 5400mhz super pi 32m. It keeps crashing with 1.58v on loop 18 or 19 so tomorrow I will get it stable. Then I'm going to set up a proper benching OS on a spare drive and see what she can do after some optimization.

I will run her at 5ghz 1.35v daily, but what's a safe benching voltage? I had minor degradation with Sandy but I heard Ivy is more resistant? Can I use 1.6v for short periods of time delidded on water? I really want 5400 or 5500mhz....

It's funny because I haven't been into benching in years ever since the Chilly1 incident...but I forgot how much fun this is. I have 8 sticks of samsung DDR3 incoming that I hope to get some 2600-2800mhz sticks out of. But now that I have this chip, I might have to pick up some 3000+ capable sticks.

1.6v for short periods on water is probably pushing things quite a bit.
You have to remember that it is the 22nm process instead of 32nm.

I don't own one of these but logic tells me it isn't a good idea to put 1.6v on water into one of them, especially a good one

You seem to just have hit the jackpot with that chip. If it has a good IMC you're golden. :envy:

Took 5th place on HWbot for watercooled 3770k. I'm sure there's lots of people out there who are faster that haven't submitted, but honestly its not bad for a daily rig running Windows 7 that has a ton of stuff running in the background. I think if I set up a dedicated partition and OS I can take the #1 spot. This is literally with zero optimization besides setting affinity, priority, and windows classic theme. I'm a noob with superPi so once I do some research how to optimize I think I will do better.

Honestly I am really liking this Samsung 30nm ram. I paid $32 total for all 8GB of this and it's doing 2600+ mhz LOL. I remember back in the day I paid $400+ for 2x256mb of mushkin BH5.

Have a koolance 380i coming in tomorrow along with some Liquid Ultra TIM for between the cpu and block (didn't want to use liquid pro because of bonding issues). Right now I'm using an old XSPC rasa block that is gunked up with plasticizer along with AS5 so I'm hoping this can get me 5500 1m and 5400 32m with under 1.6v.

I've read Liquid Pro can be cleaned off but it takes alot of work. Works great though.
