After getting fed up with my p8p67 WS revolution I decided to scrap my sandy bridge build and grab a Maximus V Extreme and 3770k. I'm dead set on 5ghz linx stable, and I have a decent XSPC water setup (though my Rasa block is kind of old). I know there's not much of a difference between 4.9 and 5ghz, but I just want 5ghz.
Since I get get the 3770k's at Microcenter for so cheap, I only lose a few bucks ebaying them. Thus, I don't have a problem buying and selling until I find a good chip.
But here's the thing - I plan on de-lidding whichever one I decide to keep, so once I do that I'm stuck with it. It seems like virtually no 3770k's do 5ghz without de-lidding due to heat. So far, the best one I've found does 4.8ghz linx stable, but with high 1.425v.
My question is, what are some good signs that a chip will do 5ghz when de-lidded under water? Should I look for something like 4.8ghz at 1.3v? 4.9ghz @ 1.4? I won't have a problem running up to 1.5v once it's de-lidded, but I'm not used to ivy bridge and just am having a really hard time testing high voltage clocks due to heat. I've been going over 100C past 1.45v in some cases.
I realize it's mostly luck, but what's your "gut feeling?"
