MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning Launched

Not sure if this is a re-post, but I haven't seen it around so ...

See here for full details: vr-zone.com

"The N680GTX Lightning comes with out-of-the-box clock speeds of 1100 MHz (GPU base), 1176 MHz (GPU Boost), although the memory is left untouched, at 1502/6008 MHz (actual/effective). The GPU is armed with 2 GB of GDDR5 memory, across a 256-bit wide memory interface."

This and the GTX670 power edition seem to be the first kepler cards on the market to allow software voltage control.

The MSI Lightning is an impressive beast that will need some further exploration once AfterBurner is ready to deal with the new digital voltage circuitry. The current power limitation is 200% and might also be raised to 300% from what I've heard. But that is what it is, so for now we'll have to focus with what we have at hand. Overclocking wise expect to reach roughly 1300 MHz with the current software based on the boost frequency. Once voltage control is opened up 1400 MHz is our next aim

The MSI GeForce GTX 680 Lightning is a very interesting product. The only thing original on the card is the GPU, MSI redesigned the rest from scratch. The PCB, the voltage circuitry, the usage of gold coated solid state chokes, copperMOS and nickel plated capacitors are just a simple indication of that.

I don't get it... the whole point of these cards is the fact (that) they allow sw voltage control yet all the reviews I've seen (of them) either don't test their overclocking prowess or merely don't stretch it/them enough...

What's the point of reviewing an overclocking card w/t (properly) testing the very f***ing overclocking for which it was designed for? Without it it's a mere GK104 card no more or less impressive than the dozens other such cards out there... honestly what's the point?

MSI hasn't released a working afterburner with software voltage control just yet. You would think that they would have wanted to get that out in time for reviews.

Oh yeah, sorry, just noticed. Still my point stands for a dozen of other reviews of previous gen cards which where designed for overclocking yet overclocking was the very thing most reviewers were NOT testing. Hope that once we'll get the updated Afterburner we'll also get proper reviews this time around, Gk104 with voltage control -indeed- seems like a very attractive option...

That might be what they need to compete with the upcoming 7970 ghz edition.

I really hope that someone gets some sort of software voltage control working for other cards. Reference GTX680 does use the same chil controller as this 680 lightning.

I like my 7970 lightning but if I start seeing some bigtime scores coming from these cards after the afterburner is released it may go up for sale ...

Nope, even though it uses the same controller as the MSI GTX 670 power edition. I wonder what exactly the difference is that allows the MSI card to have voltage control via software.

Have you tested that with a dmm? If so what do you see and which program are you using?

Nice, I sold my Lightning and want to try a pair of CuII's

Guys, what do you think is the likelihood of MSI releasing 4GB Lightning Extreme?

According to an email exchange I had with MSI a 4GB Lightning is not planned. Who knows how accurate that is but that's what I was told.
