Girl has stomach removed after drinking an Ln 2 :banana::banana::banana:tail in United Kingdom

Not so much related to technology, but it relates to the extreme and a common chemical among the extreme.

    http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/arti...=feeds-newsxml

A teenage girl who had her stomach removed and 'nearly died' after drinking a tail containing liquid nitrogen was the victim of a 'irresponsible alcohol industry,' according to senior health bosses.

Gaby Scanlon had been drinking with friends at a wine bar to celebrate her 18th birthday when she was bought two 'Nitro Jagermeister' tails.

Guess liquid nitrogen use should be left for the experts.

Can't believe something like this happened in a public establishment, really stupid fad drinks.

Poor girl, she is going to suffer the consequences for the rest of her life.

Edit: how can anybody be that stupid? Stupid enough to serve the tails, stupid enough to drink them.

I've seen overclockers handle LN2 when drunk and never do anything stupid.

LN2 really isn't that dangerous when handling it, but drinking - that is a whole different matter. It can't go anywhere. It seems that this drink was just something on the menu though? Maybe it was supposed to vaporize in the mouth and create funny steam out of the nose or something but they used too much.

Cannot quite imagine how this is possible if it was a Jäger shot, from a shot glass topped with a 'drop' of LN2.
I don´t think the whole thruth has been told.

Maybe it was a pint of Jäger (it tends to happen ) rather than a shot.
In either case there must have been more LN2 than a shot glass can hold (4cl+).

The stuff evaporates so quickly (especially in body temperature) that even in the worst case it should only cause a very minor frost bite to the back of the mouth. I´ve taken a small sip of LN2 couple of times and the worst thing that has happened was a small sting in the tongue and teeth.

Or maybe it was dry ice, and she swallowed a chunk of it?

Whoever thought it was a good idea to put liquid nitrogen into a c0cktail is a special kind of stupid and IMO should face criminal charges. Something along the lines of reckless endangerment or criminal negligence combined with at least a year behind bars to ensure they had plenty of time to think about how stupid they truly are.

I worked about a year as a bartender and we had clear standards regarding the safety of various additives, one of which was to never put something in a drink that you yourself won't drink straight. So obviously LN2 and Dry Ice were off the menu. The only thing i'd occasionally serve in a c0cktail was a little 190-proof EverClear which was technically illegal to sell here in California.... but the loophole in the law allowed me to "give" it to someone. So it was only allowed in special shots which we'd give to fee of charge to friends or regular customers who were brave. And yes, I have had it straight as a shot... and it was like drinking lighter fluid, resulting in my throat feeling scratchy for a few days. So it's not advisable to use it without mixing.

I'm not sure how things are in the UK, but here in the Peoples Republic of Kalifornia... the bartender can be held criminally liable if some idiot has way too much to drink and causes a car accident while driving home. What ever happened to personal responsibility for being the ass-hat who got in the car and caused the accident. But i guess the law will make bartenders more likely to cut off heavy drinkers and help prevent accidents, but any and all blame in those cases should be placed 100% on the guy who got behind the wheel.

Thats what i was thinking as well. There was a fad about a decade ago here in Kalifornia where some bartenders would add dry ice. I'm sure a few people got the crap frozen out of their throats which is why I believe they outlawed dry ice in drinks here in this state.

Was going to mention the same as FlanK3r, a lot of teacher do this trick as well. Very few accidents have been recorded about it as well.

I can see it happening if she drank 2 shots very quickly in succession and shortly after they were added with Ln2.

I don't know what happens if you add LN2 to alcohol, but is it possible that it chilled the alcohol down to levels cold enough to cause internal damage? I know you can turn water to ice by adding LN2, and with alcohol's lower freezing temperature maybe the shot was sitting pretty far below zero even if all the LN2 had evaporated?

Hmm.... But DRINKING LN2..... I am thinking, sure most will expand in mouth, and almost everything on the way down, but pressure wont be fully equalized before reaching stomach........ And when expanding in stomach, one would get a gassy stomach - farting party, hmm, I cant imagine that being a good idea, but hey - just my opinion.

Pint of Jäger.... That actually sounds like a quite good idea! One can get pissed, but still relatively safe..... Obviously not for a kid from primary or highschool, but most adults should be able to handle that quantity.....

I have done this many times as well and if you pour enough it will tingle or even sting your mouth.... but never really anything that I would say would cause irreparable damage.

hell im not exactly gonna chug down a Thermos of it, but then again I have common sense.

that might be the key ingredient missing in this case

I imagine the "point" is to pour a little bit on the top of the drink, then serve it so there's a pretty trail of vapour for presentation. I can't help but think there's more to this than what the papers are reporting. To cause a stomach rupture, I wonder if it needs a frozen item (a cherry?) or a large volume (someone drank an entire flask at Campus party Berlin this year and other than some prolonged "LN2 breath" as it expanded in his stomach, was pretty much fine)

    SAFETY: DO NOT DRINK LN2

Jagermeister is a herbal liqueur it's kind of syrupy, it contains crap that can freeze if cooled low enough. I'd bet that the bar tender loaded it down with too much ln2 as well.

At any rate this is just moronic. The service industry should not put ln2 or dry ice in peoples food or drink.

So... people are talking about "the alcohol industry" trying to make people buy more booze, using fancy stuff like this.

Are spirit/liquer distributors offering discounts to pubs who do this? I really don't think so. I imagine it was a pub that wanted to offer something unique to their customers to draw them in. It's not the alcohol industry, per se.
