Synology unveiled the new DiskStation DS213+, a high performance 2-bay NAS server designed as a secure, energy efficient, and full-featured storage solution for small and medium businesses.
Synology DS213+ delivers high performance when needed, but during low activity level it also uses very small amount of power. During System Hibernation mode, DS213+ consumes only 2.6 watts of power to listen for network activities, and resumes back to operation in very short amount of time upon demand. Compared to shutting off the whole system, System Hibernation brings a closer balance between smart energy management and system responsiveness.
Here are the main specifications:
Package and accesories
The unit arrived inside a green and white box box with the Synology logo on it.Features and specifications at the rear of the box.Synology DiskStation truly earns the title of “green product” because all Synology products are produced with RoHS compliant parts and packed with recyclable packing materials.
Bundled with the DS213+ chassis are the following accessories: an AC adapter, an installation CD ,a lan cable ,a welcome paper and a manual and some screws.
The Synology DS213+ DiskStation has a nice black plastic surface. All in all, the DS112+ is a very nice looking unit.
Either side has the Synology insignia carved out – as seen on other 2012 models and although this is unit is entirely plastic it still holds a level of quality and edge of professionalism.
Moving to the front of the unit along the right edge of the unit are various LED indicators .Al those features are there to help monitor and even connect to and control the unit. The LED indicators are as follows:
• Status LED
• LAN LED
• Disk 1 LED
• Disk 2 LED
Under those leds are 1 x SD Card Port , 1 x USB 2.0 Port ,c copy button and power Button. With just one single touch, you can quickly backup data from a USB storage device or a SD card to a Synology DiskStation. Just plug in the external storage devices into DiskStation, push the copy button on the front panel, and all files will be uploaded immediately to a specific shared folder on the DiskStation.
Next moving to the rear we get to the basic connectivity side of things. This is where we have our single Gigabit LAN port ,one eSATA port and dual USB 3.0 ports to ensure high speed transfer rates no matter the usage. Also included is a cooling fan to keep all of the important bits safe and a DC jack to power the unit,a sata port and lastly a Kensington security lock port to ensure the unit goes nowhere once it is installed. Synology DS213+ is designed with energy efficiency in mind. Not only does it provide a 92 x 92 mm fan and the smart airflow to keep the system running cool 24/7, its noise dampening design makes it really quiet compared to PC counterparts. The support of Wake on LAN/WAN, multiple scheduled power on/off and hard drive hibernation can further reduce power consumption and operation cost.
At the bottom of the unit there are many ventilation holes. Also we see the rubber fits for stabillity.
Here we see the front without the cover on it. The cover allows air to flow over the drives and acts as a sound diffuser as well. The installation of the drives is really quite simple. Users need only pull off the front piece which covers the dual drive bays and we see a rather standard front face on our DS213+.Then we simply slide out the hot swap trays we find that standard screw mounting is used to hold the drives in place on the tray.
The drive sleds are plastic instead of aluminum or steel because the plastic absorbs vibration and doesn't transfer it to the drive like the metal sleds. Synology also uses rubber grommets between the drive and the sled, another vibration arrestor.
When looking inside the product, we can find the SATA Data and Power connectors. The PCB is being covered by a metallic plate.
The DS213+ platform includes a 1.067 GHz Freescale MPC8544E dual-core CPU and 512 MB of DDR3 RAM.The built-in Floating-Point Unit makes for faster thumbnail processing to enhance photo viewing at different resolutions.
The DS213+ can be configured in multiple EXT4 formatted volumes using Synology Hybrid RAID, Basic, JBOD, RAID 0, RAID 1 options. The built in volume creation wizard makes complicated technology look simple. A few simple clicks are all you need to create a working volume, ready for storing all your important data in no time. With SHR, the time consuming volume creation in the past no longer exists. You can immediately start to store data in your DiskStation just shortly after. As you are storing files, the process will take care of itself in the background without affecting your work.Unlike traditional RAID that creates volume based upon the smallest hard disk within the array, SHR divides each hard disk into smaller chunks, creating additional redundant storage. This allows the capacity of each disk to be utilized to its maximum possible, thus optimizing total volume capacity.Depending on your choice, SHR provides 1 to 2 hard disks fault-tolerance of data protection. So even if one hard disk fails to function properly, your data is still accessible unaffected.

I now begin the benchmark portion of this article, but first let me show you my test system and the software I used:
OCZ Vertex 4 512GB SSD
Mainboard X79 MSI GD65 - Intel SATA 6G controller in AHCI mode
Processor Core i7 3960X at default configuration
Graphics Cards GeForce GTX 580
Memory 16 GB (4x 4096 MB) DDR3 1600 MHZ
Power Supply Unit 1200 Watt
Monitor Dell 3007WFP - up to 2560x1600
OS related Software Windows 7 64-bit SP1
Using only a single hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 3TB XT 7200RPM)for testing in each NAS.
This certainly is an impressive result and an excellent start for the DS213+ .
Comparing the Synology DS213+ to the Qnap TS-219 PII(2.0 ghz cpu) we can see that it is slower at most of tests, though still managing to beat the other two units.
In terms of power consumption the DS213+ is extremely efficient, using less power than other units. The low power consumption levels are courtesy of the Freescale MPC8544E dual-core CPU processor .
Hard drive hibernation or sleep mode is a quit powerfull feature that will make your hard drive power down in order to save power. This hard drive hibernation will occurre when the drives is out of work for some time. With hibernation the hard drive saves the current state and will resume this state when the drive is about to work again.
Enable hard drive hibernation in Synology DSM is pretty Straightforward. Do the following in order to setup your hard drive hibernation:
*Login to DSM.
*Go to ‘Control Panel’.
*Go to ‘Power’.
*Go to tab ‘HDD Hibernation’.
*Choose your time.
*Click ‘OK’ button.
During System Hibernation mode, DS213+ consumes only 2.6 watts of power to listen for network activities, and resumes back to operation in very short amount of time upon demand. Compared to shutting off the whole system, System Hibernation brings a closer balance between smart energy management and system responsiveness.I used hibernation on DS213+ and I have not experienced any problems with hibernation.
Synology has done a very good job when it comes to adding new software and features to their NAS products and this includes models made years ago.The DSM 4.1 software is as powerful as previous versions, which were very impressive.Synology are constantly updating this software and we are certain it will remain class leading for the foreseeable future.Installation and setup is incredibly easy. The dual core processor not only improves the speed of the unit but it should allow the entire system to run more efficiently and quickly. That said, the more important upload and download performance was very strong.
The price is a bit high (£271) and there are cheaper alternatives in the market.Certainly there is a sizable cost difference, but that also comes with a sizable power consumption difference as we have shown here today. Once you start to calculate the amount of watts needed , we can start to see how spending more upfront on the DS213+ will equate to long term cost savings. These savings may, over time far outweigh the initial cost since these units are built to provide many years of service and the need for replacement is often as long as ten years out.Overall the Synology DS213+ is an impressive product with it's Hibernation function that sets a new standard for all NAS devices.
