Microsoft Orders DMCA Takedown for Windows 8 Screenshots

A few days ago, NGOHQ.com published a screenshots gallery of Microsoft Windows 8 RTM. But apparently posting screenshots of Microsoft's software is considered a copyright infringement... or at least that's what Microsoft claimed recently.

Hmmm, should I? A nice, in-depth look at why Metro UI sucks along with a few dozen screen shots? I don't need Google to spread it, there are plenty of other mediums (forums, Facebook, Twitter...)

is it really better or you just dont need to strip it before benching. it seariously needs an sp1 to change metro to the secondary desktop then we may move to it.

review, educational, and support sites are also have an exemption from DMCA so i do not get why MS would do this, it is even RTM and you are allowed to post screen shots unless MS changes the EULA to something utterly retarded.

You would expect such big companies to have a much better PR and rights management.

No PR, regardless of amount or quality, can save Windows 8.

I can confirm this happened to us as well. However, in our case, it was a DMCA notice to remove a link to an MSDN page which included a download for Win 8 trial.

We are fighting it. In court if need be. It is pure and unadulterated ridiculousness.

This has all of the hallmarks of a copyright "bot" that goes looking for keywords. I just can't believe it....or maybe I can.

Win 8 is already a fail and they know it. They must face the facts, rethink the UI and other crap, and let the websites/blogs out of their frustration.

The worst thing about the DMCA notices is that you are guilty before you can prove yourself innocent. Once a DMCA notice is filed, you MUST take down the URL at the offending link, even if you reply to challenge the ruling. To make matters worse, the actual notice is HIDDEN until WEEKS after the warning is issued. The whole process is absolutely preposterous.

Really Microsoft? I thought they wanted to promote their new OS, but doing DCMA's against Windows 8 screenshots is going a bit to far, ain't it?

Anyway, I won't be using this OS because I think it looks like a disaster, Metro just ain't working for desktop users.

The issue is that it doesn't matter. A takedown notice will absolutely ruin our Google pagerank and it doesn't matter where you are in this world, Google's search indexing is king for traffic.

Whoa I linked the trial on this forum too...
I just thought it was neat they were putting out the trial so early but wth... ^^ oops I guess...

Edit: Nm, I thought I posted the link to the trial somewhere on this forum, but it was a link to the hashes.
I swore I did though... I'm gonna look more :\.

ms marketing dept telling the ms legal dept who to go after trying to mitigate what will be another vista'ish disaster , if more $/time was spent on the actual product instead of paying the shysters ms might actually have an OS that was usable on a PC
lots and lots of cores and lots and lots of tuners,HTPC's boards,cases,HDD's,vga's,DDR1&2&3 etc etc all powered by Corsair PSU's

Now we have Microsoft employees insulting us publicly on the Neowin's forum and trolling our comments' system.

    wow what a mess.
on topic of windows 8 though. i am 100% positive that it was never meant to be installed on a computer desktop or laptop.
it was an OS specifically designed for Microsoft Surface tablet and that it is.

the desktop market is a diminishing environment though and i can see why Microsoft is closing the door on windows. tablets are full screen things.

since those tablets are gonna be trying to compete vs nexus 7 and google android. i see windows 8 as a free OS , which microsoft will provide on tablets being sold at a loss (in the rt case).
and just eating all development costs of the OS for a while on the higher end tablets using x86.

This is ridiculous. What purpose could this serve. This hardly bodes well or MS or Windows 8 at the moment. Surely reviewers cannot be forced to remove images from a preview that's publicly available.

I tried the RTM for a week and it is so counter intuitive its not sad, it's pathetic. I'm all for change but only when said change brings more good than harm. As bad as a rap Vista had early in life at least it was usable. 8 is going to crash and burn hard and ridiculous takedown notices is just going to hurt Microsofts image even further in this vain attempt at an operating system.
