    hooking Satellite to computer

I just got Direct TV into the house and went ahead and got a second hd receiver for my upstairs computer that has a haup. 1600 tv tuner that is supposed to do HD. I see that my receiver only has an hdmi out and my card only has a coaxial in. That worked fine with cable that went through coaxial but how do I get a HD signal into my tv card? Am I going to have to buy a tv monitor? thanks for any help.

Well I see that people are relunctant to advise on this subject. As I do research I see that this is an old problem. As best as I can tell I have two options. 1. But a HD video capture card that has hdmi input. I assume I can watch tv on this as well as use it as a recording device. If I am wrong about this I would appreciate a heads up. 2. But a tv monitor and use it as a monitor and a tv for the satellite box. Can anyone confirm if these two options can work. I would rather not spend money if they won't. thanks

it looks like you have a qam card for cable but you now have satellite so you cannot use your computer as the tuner. with your second post you only left it up for 4 hours early in the morning you have to wait a day.

for 1) you cannot record all content as some will have HDCP and you have no way to change the input automatically. there are grey market products that may work to break HDCP or as satellite tuner cards but they will not have good driver support.
    2) u can use a monitor with hdmi or dvi-d (with dvi you should have an optical out that you can connect to your computer for audio.) i would just get a cheap 32" panasonic or lg tv for the tv.

I'm not really sure but ther might be hdmi/dvi capture cards.
I do know for sure there is vga capture cards out there.

What you'de normally do is hook it up with a svideo cable.
    And line in audio cable.
That's what I usually did in the past when I had direct tv.

Otherwise good old composite video will do, just that it's around half the resolution/quality of svideo.

Going digital is iffy, lots of protections and standereds to deal with.
Even if you had gotten a hold of a dvi capture card, it's hard telling if it would actually work on a protected format.

Use dvi/vga or hdmi for your big screen.
    Use svideo for your pc.

I recommend a phillips chip baised capture card, then again all I have experience with is phillips and conexant.
To be honest though I'll jump through hoops to get what I feel comfy with.
My last capture device, the easy cap 2.0, I had to make my own hybrid driver (using files from a diff device and a custom made inf with my presets already to go).
Find something that's has both good quality and ease of use.

The 1st time you mess around with capturing it's a bit goofy.
It's not easy to get it working to satisfactory.

    Also...
If you're using a 64bit os, make sure you find a card that supports that.
I've never had a capture device/card that supported 64bit windows.

There are DVB-S tuner cards that you can get to hook your sat-dish directly to your computer. I have one that I haven't used for years. I used it to pick up free-to-air satellite channles. You can also get the paid channels
but you must have a card reader, and a valid card. It's fun, however it's more of a hobby kind of thing since you must figure it all out.
