Hacking group leaks 1 million Apple user IDs

Is apple safe?, is apple protecting users personal data?? (or just grabbing money)
    More here

    "
Is your data safe anywhere? Just months after a half-million Yahoo! passwords, 6.5 million LinkedIn passwords, and 55,000 Twitter passwords were leaked, the hacktivists at AntiSec have found their next data goldmine: a stash of 12.4 million Apple Unique Device Identifiers (UDID).

According to the Anonymous-allied hackers, a list of 12.4 million Apple Unique Device Identifiers (UDID) was found on an FBI agent's Dell notebook. Each UDID was associated with user names, device info, and in some cases, phone numbers, names, and addresses. It is unknown why the FBI would have such information on hand. AntiSec leaked 1,000,001 of those UDIDs to bring light to the government's data collecting effort.

As of now, there's no reason for panic — AntiSec scrubbed a lot of personal information from their list before releasing it. But if you're still worried about your own Apple UDID appearing on the AntiSec hack list, TheNextWeb has created a web tool for checking if your information was compromised."

    When I read this sentence:

"AntiSec leaked 1,000,001 of those UDIDs to bring light to the government's data collecting effort."

What I really saw was this:

"AntiSec leaked 1,000,001 of those UDIDs beause the person didn't understand how to get a million records when using a zero based index."
Particle's First Rule of Online Technical Discussion:
As a thread about any computer related subject has its length approach infinity, the likelihood and inevitability of a poorly constructed AMD vs. Intel fight also exponentially increases.

    Rule 1A:
Likewise, the frequency of a car pseudoanalogy to explain a technical concept increases with thread length. This will make many people chuckle, as computer people are rarely knowledgeable about vehicular mechanics.

    Rule 2:
When confronted with a post that is contrary to what a poster likes, believes, or most often wants to be correct, the poster will pick out only minor details that are largely irrelevant in an attempt to shut out the conflicting idea. The core of the post will be left alone since it isn't easy to contradict what the person is actually saying.

    Rule 2A:
When a poster cannot properly refute a post they do not like (as described above), the poster will most likely invent fictitious counter-points and/or begin to attack the other's credibility in feeble ways that are dramatic but irrelevant. Do not underestimate this tactic, as in the online world this will sway many observers. Do not forget: Correctness is decided only by what is said last, the most loudly, or with greatest repetition.

    Rule 3:
When it comes to computer news, 70% of Internet rumors are outright fabricated, 20% are inaccurate enough to simply be discarded, and about 10% are based in reality. Grains of salt--become familiar with them.

Remember: When debating online, everyone else is ALWAYS wrong if they do not agree with you!

    Random Tip o' the Whatever
You just can't win. If your product offers feature A instead of B, people will moan how A is stupid and it didn't offer B. If your product offers B instead of A, they'll likewise complain and rant about how anyone's retarded cousin could figure out A is what the market wants.

I know why the FBI had that information.
Everyone purchasing from I tunes store has made a civil contract to not violate the intellectual property rights of all the artists.
Thus if you then download music freely or pieces of the songs as your DMCA rights to do so, you have breached the contract and the FBI can get you on that.

I went to the FBI for help. Hackers wanted nude pics of my 13 year old daughter. When she said no they took control of every pc in my home. I found them on Hackforums.net and spent countless hours collecting info for the FBI. First they treated me like a nut job with a crazy story! After they looked into everything they started to treat me like a hacker ? They wanted to know how I found so much info on the bad guys. I told them Google search. I gave them everything they needed to make an arrest. In the end they tell me they have no proof ! They said I was a very intimidating person with bad intentions

linux is only as secure as the users knowledge of linux. a knowledgeable windows user can easily install a quality firewall and configure it well enough to prevent a trogan horse
plus it sounds like a script kiddie not a hacker. ip addresses are not proof of guilt and he had violated that person right to privacy until that person was proven a hacker of his daughters computer in a court of law and judged. and would have still had the right to privacy from this father.
since his daughter would have had to download the trogan horse willingly its highly debatable that any hacking occurring.
sounds like a lot of effort for show me your ***'s

Stories like these make me think on grabbing my tinfoil hat and taking for the mountains with my Grandpa's civil war carbine...

    My thoughts on this...

So far the FBI has said this is all bull. Antisec is not exactly the most trustworthy source, nor is Anon. And keep in mind that both anon and luzsec were already infiltrated by the FBI. Second, they are claiming some odd things about this "laptop", namely that it was a Dell Vostro and had 3tbs worth of data. This is odd for two things, large organizations don't use the Vostro line, the government makes even less sense. They buy into the professional lines of laptops. The 3tb figure of data is dubious as well, who the hell has 3tbs worth of data on a laptop. I know it didn't all have to come from a laptop, but they've only claimed to have access to one laptop when in the past they've made a huge deal out of it when they got access to actual servers.

Now, even if the FBI was running around using Vostro laptops racking up apple UIDs there are legitimate reasons they could be doing it. They could be government owned apple devices, I wouldn't be shocked at all seeing the massive amount of enterprise and government contractors that have been using apple products now. It could also be part of an investigation into something else.

There isn't really enough data to conclude that Antisec is telling the truth here, or that the FBI was up to something malicious.

you have nothing to worry about, as long as the fbi remains insane. they'll just keep repeating the same thing expecting a different outcome. and it will never happen.

A rough guess would be that the FBI had the info to investigate some fraud related to itunes, something similar to below examples:

The FBI is rather competent at what they do... even if lately that has been building prank bombs for people and then arressting them.....
