3960X C1 owners need help urgently!

    Hi!

Could someone with a retail 3960X C1 help me?

I am selling my RIVE and left my chip sitting on the table on top of the box. I was printing something and the paper pushed the box and the chip on the floor. I cursed my luck...

The chip fell on it's heatspreader facing the floor. I carefully inspected the chip and need your help...

Can anyone check if your chip has this capacitor in place or missing? Time to contact insurance company? For now I could boot into Windows etc., but I don't like this situation.

I doubt that Intel would accept it, if it's "customer induced damage"? And it wouldn't be the right thing to do either..?

    Thanks for reply anyway

Mine has the capacitor at the arrow and looks exactly like the picture. I take it that little guy broke off on yours?

Thanks Vega, this is much appreciated!

I'll try calling the insurance company next, actually this incident should be covered.

Are you serious? You CPU is insured? How is that possible?

So, you could overclock it, kill it, and your insurance would cover it?

Hehe not actually the CPU, but we have this thing called extended home insurances in Finland which should cover accidents like this. I've read that someone even drove a car over his cell phone and it was covered, or if someone dropped an iPad on the floor, just to give examples . If the CPU would have died by overclocking or general use, they wouldn't accept it I guess..and the merchandise value must exceed 150 euros, but man, this processor costs 939e in Finland!

Well for now I was told that I must take it to a local PC shop and they should give me a statement that it's not repairable, and then hopefully I'll get covered. The girl on the phone already said that this should be covered, but we'll see. I'll report back what happens

dude RMA it, Intel gets tax write off and i guess your homeowners insurance premium doesn't go up. Wow i have never seen anyone do that. You should see what some people do to CPUs before they RMA them. So how much is your deductible?

Thanks sin, well I went for the insurance company this time. The missing capacitor is too obvious for Intel to accept it. I took a look at their warranty terms and missing components would be inspected upon the arrival of my processor possibly resulting in expenses for me. I've worked with RMA things myself for 4 years in the past and have some understanding what might be under warranty and what not, that's why I'm scared.

For the insurance I have to pay 150 euros myself (deductible?) and the rest would be covered, also I have had to pay 60 euros for a statement from a local shop that it's really unrepairable and broken. But the statement should be covered as well

I'll hope this turns out well for me. I actually bought this chip second hand in the past for under 700 euros, so I might get everything back in the end.

Now I also have been thinking if the i7-3980X gets released anytime soon, I might get the i7-3820 today and see if I can get it any higher with my H100 cooling as 4.5 GHz was my upper limit with the 3960X..actually my still running i7 990X clocks almost better! Well the 990X was a golden chip in my books anyway lol

Extended Insurances in here finland covers allmost any accidental damage to anything you own.
Intel would never take that cpu to warranty/rma since its damaged so its right call to go into insurance company.

Unfortunately when i accidentally damaged my Xeon E5-2687W CPU i didnt have Extended Insurance that covers up accidental damage of computer parts, after that i got extended insurance and now accidental damage is covered in computer parts also.

    Hey, a fellow Finn cheers!

Ouch, your CPU costs almost twice that I damaged. What happened to it?

Hmm my curse with X79 almost continued today. I grabbed that i7-3820 from a local retailer. When I was walking to my car which I was around 400 meters away, the sky just literally opened and it started to rain like I was in a shower. I put the CPU under my t-shirt and didn't get too much water on the retail box. Phew... I don't believe my luck anymore

Hi all who replied, so in the end I got 750 EUR back from this incident. Maybe the first time ever I've succeeded with the insurance company...or had to use it

Lowest new processor price in Finland minus 150 euros deductible. Currently waiting for the release of Core i7-3970X!

Thanks to all who replied, especially Callsign_Vega!
