From what I have seen the MSDN Win8 was still not looking very ready so its a bit concerning that they think its good enough to be RTM.

Windows 8 is not going to go down well.

How so? I have had my VM host at home running server 8 for 3 months now with no downtime what so ever.

I'm sure MS has put it through its paces. But a lot changes in a PE. I have to admit though it's definitely growing on me.

    Finally...

Thanks for the heads up .
    I'll be looking for it.
I guess I should probably make sure ultimate is the highest end ver before I go looking in the future...
I hope the demo comes out fast too...

If the performance sucks, I'm trashing it.
If it's good, it's replacing win7 for me.

I think this is going to flop hard on desktop. Server and VS... omg that'll be fun.

as much as metro ui has turned me away. i am sure if we all stick to our guns about not using metro. they'll have to patch disabling metro back in. maybe even make areo theme option right under visualizations.
on the plus though, windows 8 is third generation of minwin based core. makes it a lighter base of needed .dlls for those of us shrinking the OS.
new methods of using the processors for better perf. (atleast on amd's) so its pretty much a necessary update for those of us wanting multi ssd' raid 0 and 8+ core performance.
the quick starting of the os too.

i kinda hope the effort that has been put forth to make the os light enough to work on arm and tablets. directly benefited the windows 8 portion too.

i do not think that having metro as mandatory is the problem, the problem is getting rid of all of the classic UI other than a bit off explorer, but that has the stupid ribbon now even.

The software systems are good. Its just their GUI gambit is bad. They're betting the company on metro and it won't work out as planned. They'll have to backtrack some, especially in productivity environments

Server 2012 is really pretty damn good. The file system stuff is still behind zfs and btrfs, but at least they are finally trying.

The metro GUI stuff won't be accepted into productivity environments. Every server admin who plans to interact with it will install at least classic shell like I did. Same for most business folks I imagine.

Imagin all the people that regulery ask you for basic tech support asking you to teach them how to use win8.

Ive let a few people play around with the Win8 RC and it was hilarious.

Precisely. Any sane business will just skip this crap. If you want to be productive you want Win8 far away from you. It's a real shame because the underlying OS is fantastic.

    Something I just realised:

    Windows 2000: 6 service packs
    Windows XP: 3 service packs
    Windows Vista: 2 service packs
    Windows 7: 1 service pack

Microsoft is getting better at building OSs

7 was mostly a service pack for vista, and 2000 had service packs that were just update packs.
