    Patriot Viper DDR3-2133 PV38G213C1K 8GB 1.5V Ram Kit

This is another preview-then-review thread like the G.Skill ones before it. They seem to work out well and are fun with memory.

Patriot sent a low voltage DDR3-2133 kit with some interesting specs, one of which isn't published on the spec sheet - one of its compromises aside from the obvious timings is that it has a 3T command rate.

It'll definitely be interesting to see how that plays out or if it makes any difference at all. Until then though, here is some eye candy.

The plus side is its default 1.5V, giving me hope they can be overclocked well even at the standard 1.65V. Time will tell!

Thanks for the link! I'm hopeful as well, especially with the low voltage default. I sense potential, just need the time to bring it to the fore.

Ok, well that was short-lived and painful. At stock, everything crashes. AISuite, Paint.net...more importantly, SuperPi 32M crashes the system, not just won't complete. Even updated BIOS in case it was mis-reading the XMP profile, but that didn't help a bit. Emailing Patriot. D'oh.

Patriot always seems to have the leftovers from Geil, G.Skill and Team lol. Same ICs but much weaker clocks.

Who me? No, I write for Overclockers.com, and my kit seems to have a problem running stock. I haven't given up totally yet but Patriot speedily responded they'll exchange the kit no problem if I can't get it stable.

All righty then, we're back in business. The replacement actually arrived last week but I was a bit busy with the NDA GPU review we published yesterday.

So I plugged the RAM in, set XMP and booted up. Everything was fine this time, passing SuperPi 32M with ease (the other kit was lucky to boot into windows, much less pass SP32M.

Unfortunately, after plugging in the R.S.T. Pro, it wouldn't quite pass at absolute stock settings.

After a minor voltage bump to 1.55V (actual running voltage was 1.555 on a DMM), it passed with flying colors.

While I absolutely believe Patriot hand-tests these kits, the board they used on this kit must have over-volted slightly. Or their testing method isn't as strenuous as the R.S.T. Pro 3 (I do not know their testing method). Regardless, it's light years from where the first kit was, so on with the review.

I hadn't seen it prior to this kit. It's one of the sacrifices made to get DDR3-2133 frequencies at such low voltage.

I wonder how this kit performs with ~1.65v @ both stock speeds and when overclocked as well as with tighter timings/command rates etc. Looking forward to more test results...

These sticks really seem to vary; some people have had success clocking them past DDR3-2400 with loose timings. Others struggle to get past 2133.

"Sacrifice" my arse. Even the F3-12800CL7D-8GBXM I reviewed will do 2133MHz @ 11-10-10-25 1N (T) timings at 1.6v. With 2T and those timings absolutely no problem with 1.5v. Methinks Patriot are packing some crap ICs under those heatspreaders, or at least the junk G-Skill / GEIL didn't want.

Heh, ok, let me rephrase. It's the sacrifice that Patriot made that allowed them to get these sticks to operate at that speed with 1.5V.

Those sticks still look flaky as all hell. You get a DOA kit, the sticks have to have a 3T rate just to run 2133MHz, half the users can't get past 2133MHz and the other half with crap timings can get to 2400MHz. To call this kit from Patriot wildly unpredictable would be a understatement. I'm thinking this kit is little more than a overclocked CL8 kit of some 1600MHz ICs. Forget about running this kit at any kind of respectable timings @ 2133, you might get them running with fairly good timings @ 1866 though.

i got the kingston 2133 kit (same price) it is 1t, and dose 9-10-10 1950mhz on my 1090t with 1.62V so i do not see the point of this patriot. 1.5 v 1.6 may seam like a nice voltage drop to some people but you are looking at 2.5-3W for 2 sticks of that kingston stuff (according to their sec pdf) so the power consumption dose not matter.

i wish that the ROG contest stuff would ship so can try for some higher clocks.

I wouldn't all 11-12-11 crappy timings for 1200MHz. That's what Kitguru was able to push them to. HardwareLuxx's results aren't bad either. They're Hynix CFR, some are strong and some aren't.

it looked like cfr to me (like you said), and i was judging based on the stock profile as getting 3t v 1t

can the OP look at the bottom of the sticks and tell what chips they are

I picked up a kit of gskill ripjaws 2x2gb, 1866 9-10-9-28 1.5v, XMP also sets 3N (T) which I hadnt seen before either. They would pass 32m at 1T though without any added voltage, thet look like HynixBFR

All the G-Skill kits I've tested (3 of them now) all default to 1N (T) on the boards I've used them with spanning P67, Z68, and Z77.

What kit are those ICs on? I have a kit of Ripjaws that can be.. donated for "scientific purposes" if need be. I'm actually a little curious about a few kits of Ripjaws I have, one is a 1600 CL9 kit that will do 10-9-9-25 1N @ 1866 with just 1.6v and a CL7 kit of Ripjaws that will do 8-9-9-25 1N @ 1866 1.6v or 2133 with 11-10-10-25 1N @ 1.6v. Sadly the latter of those kits won't do 8-8-8 timings @ 1866 even with 1.65v, BSOD when booting Windows. I might have to get onto my contacts at Asrock and get them to look at doing some refining for high capacity memory kits because I'm seeing very similar patters in a lot of memory kits regardless of if they are budget, midrange or highend kits.

Not too many ICs these days like those "flat" timings like 8-8-8, 9-9-9, etc.

I know, but Asrock seem to be a little behind when it comes to refinements for high capacity kits anyway. I have a lot of people always telling me their CL6 kits won't do CL6, only CL7, so something is slightly skewed anyway. In all honesty I'm disappointed with the 8GB CL7 kit of Ripjaws I tested, for £70 ($110) their really not quite up to snuff considering their price. The super budget 8GB CL9 kit of Ripjaws I tested do just as well as the CL7 kit.
