Gigabyte AM3 socket board won't post

So basically this is the story. I have built this comp more than a year ago, worked fine until now. Had a power surge in the house, and the computer did not want to start anymore. Basically, when pressing the power button, it starts for about 1 sec, you can see the fans starting to work, then it stops.

Pressing the power button again has no effect. One needs to reset the power supply and then press the power button again to revert to the previosly described behavior.

Now, I thought the power supply fried, so I replaced it with a new power supply, but I got the same behavior.

Any ideas? is the motherboard fried? Anything else might be wrong?

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated ...

    Thanks!

    Dana

That is usually what happens when there is a short circuit.

I would say the motherboard is fried, check for physical (visible) damage really close.

Cannot see any physical damage. can it be anything else? I would hate to buy a new motherboard, only to discover it behaves the same ...

Motherboard, Power supply, or CPU. But the CPU usually turns on and stays on but doesnt POST. So it is probably the motherboard.

You could try taking everything out of the tower and turning the PC on. Just to make sure it isnt some really random coincidence that the tower is suddenly shorting things. Cheaper test than just replacing the motherboard now, and the MB would need to come out anyway.

I have no experience with this, but replacing the motherboard won't cause all sorts of issues with the installed software?

I would suggest test RAM and those other components in other rig if you can, I also think that's the mobo but just for be sure before move on to a new mobo.

If it is a similar chipset board (ie 790FX) and you were using the southbridge sata ports, you can replace it with any other board in the AMD line that is above it without issue.

Like a 770 board to 990FX, you would still be able to boot up and after a few restarts you would be fine.

But if it were the RAM, then it would at least post, it wouldn't just be dead ... The weird thing is that I press the power button and then it starts for a sec. And then it dies. I do not think there is much it gets to do in that time frame ...

That means there is a short somewhere, almost always having to do with the motherboard. The power surge could have blown something on the board so now that is all it does. I highly suggest a quality surge protector in the future. The only ones I know of that are designed for sensitive electronics like a computer are the Tripplite ISOBAR ULTRA series surge suppressors. All others dont clamp down until the voltage is much too high.

    These ones:

I have built the computer outside of the case. I have replaced all the components. New motherboard. New processor. New power supply. NOTHING, NOTHING makes this piece of ... start. I am afraid something else fried, and I am fresh out of ideas Folks, what is the MINIMUM configuration that should start? I.e motherboard + processor + power supply?

Is there a way to start the system WITHOUT the start/stop button? Like shorting the pins on the motherboard or something similar.

    Mobo + cpu + ram....test those three.

Check the manual for know the correct pins for start the rig without the buttons.
