Since when has any hd company ever had some sort of working qc testing method?
Regardless of what brand I've never had there testing software actually tell me the real lowdown.
I've always had to manually verify every cluster.

Example:
Drive software takes 50mins or so, says drive is good.
I manually fill up the drive and in 10-20mins it fails completely on the 3rd platter.
Go figure...

Heh heh...everyone has a price and Ocz's won't be cheap. Seagate has probably been eyeballing Ocz for a while...when Ocz announces the upcoming and very powerful Indilinx Barefoot 3 (a 400MHz 32bit controller/processor...more here) that might have been just enough to cinch it.

Never had any problems with any OCZ product, from Vertex to Vertex 3 and from RevoDrive 3 X2 240Gb to RevoDrive 3 X2 960Gb, not even single problem with OCZ drives.

True...but they also spent a good chunk acquiring Indilinx as well as several other small outfits the IP needed to move not just forward but ahead. Not many publicly held companies do real well in their first few years after their IPO. If the Barefoot 3 is everything it appears to be, it was money well spent. They definitely have some ground to make up...I'm sure SandForce's botched FW and compatibility issues which stretch back to the SF1222 cost Ocz a lot of sales as well as frustrated customers, but that's the risk you take for the being the initial first and only maker of a new product and raking in the profits for months before there is any competition. It's similar to what they're doing with the new Marvell + Indilix FW except this time Ocz has total control of the FW whereas their hands here tied with SF.

WD should buy them. Or Intel. Or NVIDIA.

If it were up to me I'd rather see Intel snatch 'em up...or WD even.

Actually Intel's 520 SandForce firmware + the use of cherry picked 25nm synch nand = the fastest SF2281 based drives and even beats a lot of SF + Toggle drives. Afaik Intel is the only outside entity ever allowed inside SF's firmware and they rewrote the fw with SF's assistance. Intel got to keep it's 'secret sauce' part for itself but shared the stability/compatibility fixes.

I have a 330 which is a bit slower than the 520. Reliability is just as with every other Intel so far thou.

One thing I'm not completely satisfied with is Sandforce's somewhat low incompressible sequential write performance. A lot of people crap on sequential speeds, but I guess those people don't deal with video. I want faster 4K and faster sequential

i don't really see how this is a bad thing... yea Seagate may not have had the best products in the past but their new Barracuda drives with the 1TB platters are nothing short of fantastic. I have used countless numbers of them since launch and i have yet to have an issue with any of them. not to mention there performance is far better than any other mechanical drive out there. and in Canada they are some of the cheapest drives around to boot. I never used to be a Seagate guy but after watching a few interviews with some high up Seagate people around the time the new drives came out it seems like they have done a little bit of company restructuring and such which IMO has really shown or the past little while for the better. I would love to see what they can do with Hybrid drives after acquiring OCZ as I think thats a huge area of tech where we don't have a ton of options. SSD's are still to small for the major OEM's to put in there everyday machines but hybrid drives could offer Joe average most of the performance of an SSD without the cost or small capacity if done right.

Good on Seagate I say. I hope they make the deal happen. And in reality OCZ's reliability can't get any worse...

I can't complain. I won't buy any products from either of those companies again, so I don't have a problem with them combining to form 1 massive company.

OCZ's RMA is crap. Took them at least a month to replace my failed Vertex 2, which of course failed again after like 3 months. 2 new drives failed in less than 6 months total..... That's some quality right there, especially with a 1 month downtime added in.

Aren't the 1TB platter drives seagate is selling from their aquisition of Samsung? I thought Samsung originally announcd the 1TB platter, then seagate bought them. So the only reliable drive they have was from another company.

Search the net, there are many people having problems with Intel 520, and this is after coming off Intel's 330. I too started having problems with it after 6months/2TB write, my system started randomly freezing, sometimes for 30 seconds, ruining any DVDs I was burning, and sometimes completely needing to press the reset button.
I am now on Vertex 4 and everything works great.
Sandforce is just Broke.

Hitachi are the most reliable HDD for me.

Even if they do, their drives aren't the same. WD > Hitachi for the desktops in my experience. Hitachi still has a horrible track record for me. WD used to years back (every WD I had died) but I gave them a second chance a couple years ago and they've been fine for the desktop side.

Honestly, there is no excuse for not having all personal data backed up, regardless if using a single old fashioned harddisk or a bunch of ssds in raid 0.

Everyone has had different experiences with HDD, maybe cos of how we use them, or how they are transported... I had soo many problems with WD and Samsung .... yet Hitachi has never given me a problem...

I only use the SSD for windows and a few games... of course my priority is data so I have it backed up to my server... and a bunch of Hitachi and Samsung drives.. and of course my PR0N!!!
