[FUD] Rumors of Seagate OCZ buyout

(Reuters) - Shares of OCZ Technology Group Inc spiked as much as 21 percent in early trade on a report that larger rival Seagate Technology Plc has offered to buy out the solid-state hard drive maker.

I bought into the hype today with some source saying it will be announced by Seagate on Monday 7/30 when they report their earnings.

The price tag is $1.14B, not sure if there is any debt that will need to be assumed. So that would be $16.83 per share less any debt assumption.

It's almost up a $1 a share in after market trading from $7.07 to $7.85 per share.

Yep, Monday and Tuesday will be interesting.

One unofficial report says Seagate will pay $15 per share for OCZ.

Half in stock and the other half cash.

That will equate to OCZ trading to 13.25.

But, then another article says a bidding war between Micron, Western Digital and Seagate may erupt with OCZ finally fetching $20 per share.

Thinking of buying some Dec '12 $5 call options Monday morning.

However I did take a medium size equity position in OCZ for $6.75 today. Was almost tempted to sell out of it at $8.50 in the after market trading, but decided $10+ was better than $8.50 with the dream of maybe seeing $13-$15 next week.

A hybrid drive, with a chip or so of rom cache, and the rest on platters.
Ocz already sells hybrid drives like this.

Take ocz and it's ssd's out of the picture for a moment.
Seagate comes into the market with no reg drives, they leep ahead in performance and power usage a bit compared to say western digital...
Western digital doesn't have any experience with ssd's or hybrids of any sort (just an ex, I don't know).

Yep the Momentus XT. WD has also announced that they are working on a similar drive. Honestly though in a world of plummeting SSD prices they don't really make sense to me. You can get a really good 240/256 GB SSD in the $150-$180 range these days which is plenty for OS + games and software unless you really need 20 games installed at the same time. If you want media storage just get some big cheap green drive no need for speed there.

Ironically, it would have been the perfect ploy to set the stock high so someone could sell some of their options.

Thanks. They did say the fat lady hasn't sung. I was getting excited to see what would become of this marriage. Seagate needs some SSD mojo. Not sure if OCZ needs Seagate...

They also have an issue with several investigations and now class action lawsuits by investors. This is looking quite ugly.

i am not sure what you mean by most reliable maker, they bought the maker of the quickest most reliable drives (samsung) and now they are basically unusable from speed and reliability just like the main line of seagate. they look like a perfect match to streamline RMAs to me.
