What is currently THE most demanding game on a system?

Rank them if you wish and explain why.

    Current candidates are:

    Metro 2033
    Crysis 2
    Witcher 2
    Battlefield 3

Crysis 2 and BF3, max eye-candy, 1920x1080, are toughest on my vidcards. Both push my 680s in SLI up to around 72C max. Average would be around 63C. CPU lopes along just fine. Then Metro 2033. I don't play Witcher 2.

Risen II is quite a demanding game too when maxed out.

Metro 2033 with DOF and Witcher II Ubersample are pain in the arse, 4 sure.

If you want a demanding game to stress the CPU then I think it would be skyrim, with uGrids to 13, shadowMapResolution to 8192, shadow distance to 8000, and maxSkinnedTrees to 50.

GPU demanding game, I would still have to go with Metro 2033 on completely maxed out settings.

Yes Uber'd Withcher 2 puts the hurt on GPU's. Custom Civ 5 can really work a CPU as well

Supersampling will amplify the demand of any rendering load so I'd hardly consider the Witcher 2 in the running, CDProjectRed just happened to include an ingame option for it is all. You can force supersampling in nearly anything. But if we are going by purely whats available ingame with no mods or adjustments, ARMA II by far. Maxed out with full draw distance it rapes everything peroid.

ARMA 2 is not exactly demanding, it's just poorly coded and optimized. It's a disaster.

I'd say the most demanding games right now are Metro 2033, Witcher 2, first Crysis and Shogun 2.

Crysis still demands much more than Crysis 2, and despite the hype, BF3 is not the hungry engine they try to sell. Shogun 2 needs a faster machine, Metro 2033 needs a much powerful GPU than BF3.

Witcher 2 or Skyrim with HD texture mods I'd say. Metro is just poorly programmed, thats why it runs like crap. Metro actually uses a "overhauled" version of the X-Ray engine though I'm yet to see Metro do something X-Ray 1.6 doesn't already do or can do. Crysis 2 is also crap, inferior to Crysis or Warhead in every regard - forget about it.

Metro's engine was developed by a few people who worked on X-Ray, but it is no way shape or form an "overhauled" X-Ray 1.6.

Metro 2033 only runs around 30-40FPS max on my GTX 670 SLI at 2560x1440 and can dip down to 10-20 FPS at some point.

Supreme Commander: Forged Alliance. This 5(?) year old game with thousands of units on huge maps is even to much for todays CPU's. Maybe a 5 / 5.5 Ghz phase cooled i7 would do the trick but I don't have the hardware to find out. I know that a 4Ghz i7 will go into the negative simspeed quite easily. Still, it's unrealistic to expect that everyone participating in the game has a cpu overclocked to 5Ghz, so the game is extremely demanding for normal gaming standards.

Unfortunately the game isn't played much anymore. I haven't been online in quite a while and GPGnet is replaced by the community driven FAF.

Uhh.. yes, it is. Just because the devs said it isn't doesn't mean it isn't. I've worked, and continue to work, with X-Ray, as have I got Metro. The engines are extremely similar. Anybody, and I do mean anybody, who has actually worked with X-Ray (by which I mean actually developed mods using the X-Ray engine) can tell you the Metro engine is a refined X-Ray 1.6, using far better memory management to resolve stability issues of X-Ray. Character models are also built in the same manner in Metro as they are in X-Ray 1.5 and 1.6, so on and so forth. In a nutshell, there are far, far, far too many similarities between X-Ray and the Metro engine for the Metro engine not to be a refined X-Ray.
