    SSD Upgrade

    Greetings all,

I have an older Corsaitr 128gb ssd and i am running out of space on in quickly. I am looking to purchase 2 new ssd's to run in raid. I have read reviews mentioned the plexor to be one of the best, but i was wondering what people would recommend? I am looking to get 2 128/120 ssd.

Would it be better to leave the older corsair drive in and use that soley for the OS? Using the other 2 just for game storage.

I basically only care about reads, as i only use this rig for gaming.

    Cheers,
    Matt

The Plextor M3P is a good choice. But if you are most concerned about sequential read speeds, the Samsung 830 may be a tad faster than the Plextor, although you'd be hard pressed to notice it outside of running benchmarks. The Samsung 830 is also cheaper than the Plextor M3P.

Here's a good, recent review of many 128GB SSDs:

If your going raid0 then that's where u want to put the OS along with any games. The Plex and samy are ofc great but do cost more (esp the M3 Pro) as mentioned. If you keep ur eye out you can probably catch a pair of Crucial M4s for $100 each ($125 @ NewEgg atm). If you don't want to wait for a sale, I'd go for a pair of Vertex 3s...can usually be found for $99 and free shipping. If price isn't a real issue then either a pair of M3 Pros or a pair of Intel 520's is the ticket imo.

I would go with the Vertex 4. They do amazing in a raid0 setup and the 1.5 firmware fixed the drives right up.

This is my single 256GB vertex 4

I wouldn't be buying from newegg, as i live in AUS. So it doesn't matter between samsung 830/intel 520/vertex 4 ?

    Over here -
    Intel 520 = $175
    Samsung 830 = $129
    Vertex 4 = $145

    +1 for the Samy then...

While the V4 is getting better with every fw update but it's still 'young' and needs to mature a bit more imho. Still waiting for Marvell to launch that silicon minus the Indi fw...

In that case, it is not even close. The Samsung 830 is the best of the list, and also the cheapest.

I use my 'extra' Apex 60gb as my main d/l drive. I prefer to watch all my fav TV shows without the commercials thus my d/l drive sees a lot of incompressible gigs coming down plus the rar extractions...a lot of mundane 'busy' work that racks up the GBs as far as ssds go.
My ol Apex is actually well suited for this role...it's horrid 4k performance and lack of NCQ doesn't come into play really with large seq file manipulation. Oh and no trim support either...lol Thank god it uses durable 51nm nand (10k p/e I think) and is internally raided. I'm dyin' to know how much it's racked up but the only smart value is temp. It spent it's first 1 1/2 yrs as an OS drive (XP and Win7) and was then put to eternal d/l duty once I started building my Vertex 2 array one drive at a time.

Ok i just purchased 2 128gb samsungs. Now i will be installing win 7 on these drives but i was wondering in what order do i go about this? Should i connect these 2 up, set them to raid (0 im guessing is performance) and then install windows on it? Also, i will be wiping my corsair ssd, what is the best way to do this?

Ocz Agility 3 120GB $69. It is very very good price IMO if you are considering 2 X SSD in RAID.
