Does anyone else just watch prices on ebay?

Even though I am not in the market for such I always find myself curious to see what price things like this one end at http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2210422726...84.m1423.l2649 Supermicro 2U Server+2 Xeon Quad-core+8GB DDR2 pc2 Memory+(1)500GB+Windows 2008

I do it on occasion but it usually ends up with me depressed and plotting to sell someone's organs and I don't want to go down that road.

It looks like a company's old database server. With the OS and SQL still on it I wonder what kind of information they left on it. Huge security incident there.../security-hat-off

That'd make a killer Linux cruncher

At first glance I thought so too but when you step back and consider how far things have come since that was new. Even if it were to get 4K ppd the running cost will be high compared to a simple 2600K rig. However if elec costs are low or non-existent ......

Oldchap: What is enticing about those is the look and thats all.
    Those are 65nm Clovertown's and 2006 technology
For the current price shown of $113.50 USD thats pretty decent but only when looked at as a price for that item.
That system will "maybe" do 20,000WCG PPD.
That's it pal and I am sure of that..
You want to build a new system save up and do a 2600k or save more and do a 3770K especially when you factor in the HUGE elec you poor Brits pay.
Oh, just to add a little, that SM system will draw a solid 400+watts on 120v..a little less than that on your 240v electrical grid..
IMHO today all anyone should be building is 2600k as a low cost rig or the 3770K as high end ..

That's the problem, everything changes so fast it's impossible to keep up. Add that to rising power costs (going up about 18% here in 3 - 2 - 1 ... My previous consumption would cost me over $5.2K per year on the new rates ) and it's becoming a Jacob's ladder where standing still is really going backwards.

sometimes my finger slips and hits the BIN button. I hate it when that happens. Gotta follow thru, don't want negative feedback. Have to be careful on the mobos and vid cards, those for me have been the most abused hardware ebay categories. I stick to the various forums these days. The prices are usually better on forums vs. ebay. And hopefully on forums the users are a bit more tech savvy.

Might wait for one of the dualie experts, but I think it's not bad... Especially if you want to build an SR-2 rig or something.

24 hour prime stable? Please, I'm 24/7/365 WCG stable!

So you can do Furmark, Can you Grid???
