    GPU cooling

Any thoughts/ experience on removing GU shrouds and using auxillary 120mm fans propped up against the cards to get better flow to the HSF on a GTX480? With the width of the HS I'm almost wondering if removing the built-in fan and blowing a couple of 120s dirtectly would be better?

I'm running this bad boy at about 90c and would like to get it cooler so I can crank the clocks (I know w/ +v I can get it to 1620 stable on GPUGrid.

I have taken the GTX 295 apart and re-timm'd but it didn't really help any. It's an old 2 card version so unless I lay it out like a butterfly and slap a couple stock HSF left over from my i7-920s I don't think there's much else I can do (I so want to do this anyway but I'm not willing to give up the production for GPUGrid just yet).

Funny thing ... when I broke down the 480 the entire leading edge of the hsf fins right next to the fan was solid 1/8 inch mat of dust. Since removing that and giving it all a quick dust up I am cranking it up to 1620 with no errors and temps at 65c !!!!

The story ... it's not enough to make sure the fan blades are clear but you also need to pop off the plastic enclosure (no screws on the reference design) and clean the HSF fins themselves.

On the 295 ... well I looked at the manual for my mobo (finally) and realized that slot 4 runs just as fast as slot 2 so I moved the card over, stuck a couple 120mm fans in the middle and am now crunching at 1512 with temps at 75c.

(kidding aside, you've done so much for the team but I'm bored at lunch and like a crack addict, can't stop myself)

Other than using at least the 301.42 drivers there is nothing else that needs to be done as the new app doesn't need nor recognizes SWAN_SYNC. Leave one cpu thread free (or not) and let it rip
