Linus Torvalds Tells NVIDIA to F*CK OFF

Yes, you read that right... It all has to do with NVIDIA's Linux support.

He not only tells NVIDIA to F*CK OFF in this video, but he also flips off the camera.

    More here: http://bit.ly/LinusTorvalds

Heh, yeah it was funny, however, he correctly pointed out that Nvidia is not the only one. They at least have a closed source drivers that work pretty good given the current situation. So nothing to complain about really

I mean, realistically... how much can you expect from a company like NVIDIA or AMD when it comes to Linux desktop AND laptop support? How many laptops in the world run Linux? Probably less than 1%... So, I can understand NVIDIA's lack of interest in making it a priority. I think he's just mad at NVIDIA because they have good hardware but since he's Linux only he can't get the performance he really wants.

They want NVIDIA to open up their drivers to open source. It wouldn't really take any interest or effort from NVIDIA's stance. However the competition between NVIDIA and AMD thrives on the fact that their drivers are proprietary and closed. There isn't much that could be done from either side. It will take a third company (Intel?) to come along and bring competitive hardware to market along with open source support without really caring about the competition between NVIDIA and AMD.

Android! Chip manufactures such as nvidia and friends better be friendly to developers, android is the other big player (and growing daily) in the mobile and ultra portable market. This is why he said F'k You to Nvidia, they wan't to sell their tegra chips, however they also want to keep their architecture as closed and hush hush as posable.

I think we should expect more to be honest, the simple fact that as already pointed out ARM driven devices with Tegra chips are being incorporated to a myriad of devices. Android devices are highly successful because its open source and lets developers work on their skills and showcase how much they can iron out bugs and make improvements.

I't always been my assumption that open source products tends to have a longer life cycle due to the community support.

Additionally I would like to see what would happen if AMD or nvidia released the source to their drivers, obviously thei're too scared as it is their impression it might hurt them. To be honest I believe it would be the opposite, as those horrible bugs that never get ironed out would be solved a lot faster.

I would think the issue would be someone spreading a faulty driver that damaged the physical hardware....at the end of the day, everyone would blame nVidia for its 'bad drivers'

We have already had that happen on many instances with official drivers. But let me guess, official stuff ups are ok?

I have always been pro community. Either one of these graphics giants should take the plunge and make at least prevous gen drivers open source. i.e. VLIWM 5 ...maybe 4 too

Many instances? I can think of one.

If you're going to be bashing a company at least be accurate about it.

Dude, it doesn't take a genius to figure out why Nvidia or even AMD for that matter might want to keep their drivers proprietary.

I am not bashing. If my memory serves me well nvidia had a huge stuff up with their chips on the mobile dept quite some time back.
Also if I recall correctly there had been issues with drivers stuffing up cards... Was it the 400 series?

Btw 2 out of the three machines I run have Nvidia cards in them. So dont assume I'm going all out on Nvidia here and take only what you want out of my posts.

They had one driver slip up that was pulled before it ever hit windows update, 191.07 iirc. Long before 400 series was released.

If you're going to be making comments like that at least be accurate about it.

Honestly, I see reasons to support both sides on this one. The main worrying point that Linus brought up isn't about notebook Linux support at all: its about how NVIDIA seems to be burning bridges in the Android market they're trying so hard to penetrate.

In a discussion reddit, someone brought up a very good point: nvidia / amd chips are just parallel processors. The software / drivers are as vital to the function of a GPU as the silicon itself. I can totally see why nvidia would not want to release source code or specifications for their hardware.

they had the whole thing with vista, and then the OCP that was set to low.

the thing abot the tegra that baffles me is that they try to do it correctly, they give out uncrypted drivers and kernels (i think since they legally have to) but they not give out non obstructed code and will not put out drivers with full user rights by default. that makes it nearly imposable to do any work with a tegra without reverse engineering or getting a dev kit but they only give dev kits to OEMs and have sued people who leek the dev kit documentation. even LG and HTC dropped the tegra affter NV would not put out any hardware acceleration in gingerbread and they did not put out a proper kernel until a couple months ago and they only did that since google made them if they wanted to get ICS early for tablets as they are the ICS reference with the xoom.
