HWinfo64 is more compatible with newer HD79XX cards. Much better.

I wonder how usable/not are these on normal cards/gpu-s? Eg. maybe these are ones to get to work everywhere? Or not cooling edges on normal gpu-s may hurt noticeably cooling of more common chips?

I would just put the regular flat block on the MCW82. Better safe than sorry and a flat surface for other gpus seems like a better fit.

I'm getting better results with stock heat sinks on my Sapphire HD7950 950mhz edition. From page 1 of this thread.

Just a quick 10 minute test at 1205/1575
    VDDC set to 1.15v
    Board Power Li at +15

I have my radiator fans blowing on the card. Using silverstone Raven case and the cards are in vertical position which helps cool off card much better than other cases.

    Hello All,

We completed a series of tests with a Radeon HD7970 comparing the MCW82-7900 + HD7970-HS heatsink against the reference cooler in various operating conditions and scenarios.

All tests were conducted at 23°C +/- 0.5°C ambient - GPU cooled by MCW82-7900 - Liquid Cooling system: Apogee HD & MCR320-Drive with 1800 rpm fans.

A first series of tests using the Unigine Heaven benchmark is representative of conditions found in a typical gaming scenario. Two operating conditions were tested: at stock frequency & voltage, and at maximum stable overclock & stock voltage.

A second series of tests using the Furmark benchmark is representative of artificially high loads not usually encountered in typical gaming (real life) situations. The tests are nonetheless presented as worse case scenarios. Two operating conditions were tested: at stock frequency & voltage, and at maximum stable overclock & stock voltage.

The following table is a summary of the data published on the HD7970-HS product page - There are too many pics for me to reprint here, so please refer to the product page to verify the data below. I believe that this answers all the questions you may have on the use of the product.

    Thanks for putting this out.

I'm thinking about getting the heat sink but my stock heat sinks with case fans in my Sivlerstone RAVEN RVO2 case blowing on them work well.

Also my stock VRM/memory heat sinks are 2 separate blocks for VRM and memory area keeping heat isolated from each area.

I think my card is the only card that has this type of heat sinks from the factory.

    My temps:

    (click for high resolution)

Do you think your heat sink on my card could improve temps? Keep in mind that my card is in vertical position with fans below blow up and out the case in RAVEN RV02 case.

It all depends how much air you are blowing (noise) on the heatsinks. I am using a whisper quiet 60x15, so it's not putting out much air, but the idea is keeping things cool within or below specs, at whisper quiet level. That's all you need for the VR's... if it works for you now, I wouldn't recommend changing, unless you want to drop your noise levels.

Hope you don't mind me pestering But any ETA on the 7850 heatsink? I'm this > < close to buying one of the cards as I have a buyer for my 4870 now. Though I've been tempted to just pull the trigger on the 7950... *edit* never mind, found a killer deal on a 7950 so I ordered that along with the MCW82-7900 and the HD7950-HSF

    Cool.

Post your results when you get your card all set up. Please do some before block testing.

I'm still debating getting the VRM heat sink. Then again I'm also debating selling the MCW82-7900 and getting a full cover block. My VRM temps are hotter than what I would like them.

The card is due to be here sooner than the sink so yeah it'll be on air for a little while. However do bear in mind the card I got has dual fans on the heatsink so it isn't a reference cooler... Might skew the numbers a bit.

Gabe looking at the product information of the Heatsink I noticed the screen shots of the testing doesn't match the test description.

Now I'm almost regretting buying the stuff for my card. Warranty void if removed stickers all over the heatsink screws and it actually is surprisingly quiet with the dual fan heatsink.

I'll at least give it a month to be sure the card has no problems before voiding the warranty, but I'm tempted to just resell (at a loss I'm sure ) the block and heatsink and stick with the air cooler for the warranty...

What's your brand ? I've two 7970 ( an ASUS and a Sapphire ) neither of them have any warranty void if removed stickers on the stock cooler.

    XFX.

Asus I know is aftermarket cooler friendly (says right in their RMA instructions to reinstall the factory heat sink if it had been removed, for example). XFX put little round stickers on two of the screws though. Main reason I got it over all the others was it was on sale at like $50 less than the rest at least, plus had an extra $20 rebate (and my track record with rebates is well over 90% success). Didn't realize the warranty stickers were there though, had I known I may have spent the extra for one of the others.

If there are no "warranty void if removed" stickers on the heatsink screws then yeah, you're usually fine with removing it and putting it back on or whatever. That's how Asus is for example.

XFX (what I have) does have the stickers on the screws. If they aren't there or are tampered with, my warranty is void. I took your post "heat gun + sharp knife) to mean taking the stickers off so they can then be put back on. If I was wrong on that, I'm sorry.

Improved cooling on the GPU is only going to improve the over all operation of any gpu. I don't see why XFX would not allow somebody to improve the cooling on their cards.
