    Ddr3 2800+, ddr3 3000+...what is all this??

So this question has been revolving in my mind for quite sometime now. What is all this DDR3 2800+ or DDR3 3000+ that we see on latest motherboards mean? Ever since Ivy Bridge release, this has started to appear up more often. Does it really mean anything or its just a way to get attention?

think it means if your processor can handle it also so people dont whine when they put a sandy in an ivy board and wonder why they cant get 2800mhz to boot up

I honestly did whine when I put in an ivy and DDR3-2133 didnt boot up for 4x4GB...
Basicly it is that it supports processors of which MAY operate with ram speeds of the given DDR ratings...

The motherboard I got has "Supports Dual Channel DDR3 2800+(OC)", and some of my old ram Dominator GTX3, does 1400mhz+, however, that didnt happen, it handles max 1200mhz, and not 32M stable... (2x2gb)

IF I should point at a reason that would make sense, it is a way to brand that they have the BIOS option on the given motherboard... So in my case DDR3-2800+(OC) means DDR3-2800 is max with 100mhz bclk, getting past that you have to push the baseclock.

so it is simple, your chip has a crap IMC time to sell it and move on if you want better.

And so I did, on second one, it does 1200mhz with 2 DIMM (all IC's I've tested), and 1066mhz 4 DIMM (1.271v VTT)..... Moving on to third CPU....
Point being; The 2800+(OC) is a marketing gimmick, there is no chance whats all ever, if you buy DDR3-2800 ram (which are on the market) and a regular CPU, that it will do the speeds on the motherboard.

    From a 3770K and 4 3550Ks only a couple of 3570K can go 2800+...the rest went post code 23 @ around 2700s

    Only 1 can do this

Dumo, I really dont like your new avatar... Also in my experience, both max cpu freq, and ram clock..... Will fail in a simple task "windows performance index" before wprime1024...
The behaviour of the chips are unlike anything I've ever had before...

And honestly if I find a chip that does 4 sticks 2600 I'll be thrilled....

Need tweaks to find stable settings above 2900+, but @ least imc can go along with it.

Not counting LN2 run to find how high it will go Mhz. wise...theres another binning session
