need wide lens

I'm still new in the photography world. Its really a hobby in my spare time or when I'm with family or at events. I need a lens the can take wider pictures. Its difficult taking pictures inside my house because I can't back up far enough to get the photo in full frame. I was just curious if anyone had any recommendations? I own a Nikon D3100 right now. I mostly use a portrait lens currently that I actually bought from someone here on xs. Price range?... Honestly I don't know, and mostly because I don't know what to look for. Seeing what lenses go for I would probably say $450-650. Thank you

What lens do you have now? The 18-55mm kit lenses are considered wide and they are great for what they are. If you are looking to go wider I'd recommend something like the Sigma 10-20 f/3.5 or even f4-5.6

personally i was looking at getting Nikon 50mm f/1.8D AF. i love that lens for everyday. shot with it once

its small in size, sharp image, good in low night. does 3100 have built in lens motor. i forget? i just dont find myself actually needing the zoom as you can post process crop a good shot anytime.

Great suggestions. I would say 18-55. I'm no expert, but if you get too short of a focal point then your point of view will suffer as it distorts the true-ness and straightness(below 18mm) of what we really perceive. I have an 18-55, they are cheap and are excellent for indoor use. If you pick a faster lens you will benefit from it in low light situations, if that matters to you.

If you want to save up and get a lens to take with you for the rest of your life go for the AF-S 14-24mm f/2.8G ED. Best Ultra Wide Angle Zoom ever made. I've been shooting for a long time and I'm still "saving up" for that one

I shoot wildlife though so wide angle never really makes it high on my priority list.

I've got a Tokina 11-16 2.8 and I'd say it's a pretty nice lens. Not bad on the pricing either.

That is a great lens from all reviews for the APSC cameras if the body of your camera has a built in focus drive. The poster here has a D3100 body so no focus drive in camera.

Tokina anounced back in January an updated 11-16 with a new focus motor but it has not yet been available.

I've got the canon version so the motor is in the body, but honestly the focus range is tiny. I never use the auto focus on it.

How would that lense fair against my Nikon 35mm F/1.8? Or is that 35mm you speak of the lense I have now...

You need to decide what you want to do with the lense. The Kit lense 18-55 should be wide enough but it's not so good in low light. The 35 and 50mm are great prime lense but you only getting what you have already covered with the kit lense but with better low light capability. The other lenses are too wide for portrait photography but can give you some very interesting perspectives. The Tokina 11-16mm is tack sharp but you will have to learn to use it, it'sa totally different ball game.

plus the 35 1.8 and 50 1.4 or 1.8 are not in any way shape or form a wide angle.

the big question no one has asked and maybe i missed, what is your lens? is it the 18-55 kit lens... ? ok then.
is the wide end of that lens 18mm not wide enough??? if that isnt wide enough then you are in trouble.
the only ones wider are the Tamron 10-24mm and the Tokina and the Sigma
you could go with the Rokinon 14mm wide angle. but that is full manual focus and aperture. but it is a fantastic lens and cheap.

on your crop sensor the 10-24mm is actually a 15-36mm (1.5x for nikon if i recall)

so is the wide end of your 18-55mm wide enough?
use that lens and zoom in to where you want to be, whether its 24mm or 35mm that will help us suggest a lens.

I asked what lens he had and he said the 35 1.8. So I would recommend a kit 18-55 with a SB600/700. Flash units make a huge difference indoors.
The only thing I use wide angle for is in the house and landscape/cityscape. The kit lens is more than capable for those purposes.

That is a strange lens to get with a dslr? Most people start with a kit lens like the 18-55 which gives them some variety when starting...

Nikon makes a 16-85mm which will give a little more versatility to go along with the 35mm prime. It is a little wider than an 18mm and also has some reach. http://www.henrys.com/24038-NIKON-DX...6-ED-LENS.aspx
