Day Z mod boosts ArmA 2 sales with zombies

The hardcore military simulation ArmA 2 has seen its sales spike to five times the norm, thanks to the recently-released mod called Day Z. Why such a big jump in sales? Well, it seems that as much as folks like realistic military shooters, throwing zombies into the mix--at least according to developer Bohemia Interactive's Marek Spanel--"creates an experience so addictive that I believe it can stand as a gaming experience on its own."

I am going to try it out tonight.

Scenario might be more real than you think that's why it can stand on its own.Civilization at unrest with no food supply.

I've been playing this game for the last week and I must say, I am really enjoying it.

    On Saturday it hit me:
I think we lost track of how a good game should feel. We became so wrapped up in fast paced military shooters over the years that this title really stands out as refreshing. The game is in Alpha but the developers have clearly shown that this game is capable of really big things. Even Bohemia Interactive (Creater of Arma II) are going to help them with development.

As it stands right now a typical server consumes about 8GB to 10GB of bandwidth a day so unfortunately they don't offer a way to host a dedicated server. Whatever server you join is based off of that timezone's 24hour cycle. So if you live in California and join a server on the East Coast at around 7:00pm, most likely that server is already pitch black. The best part is that your character profile is saved on a persistent server, so no matter what server you play on, you start off where you left off.

Rock Paper Shotgun really liked it too and I think that this game is going to become more popular as more people figure out just how awesome it is (especially for BETA being so far away, this team has big ideas). When you buy the game you can then download the mod for free so technically you get 3 games for $30.

I have died about 6 times now and each time I just want to come alive and do things a little differently. Although I guess one of those shouldn't count; I sprinted into Chemo in the middle of the night with a flare in hand, to attract about 70 zombies. People in chat were calling me an idiot but I dodged enough sniper fire long enough to bleed to death on top of a roof it was pretty amazing.

I love the huge 225sq km map as it feels so alive and filled with content. I love the moral decisions people are making (good and bad) and there is nothing more thrilling that hearing someone try to shoot at you with a shotgun and watching them quickly get swarmed by Zombies that heard the blast. Although there are people like me trying to stay alive and survive with others, there are people who play as bandits and steal from others.

My favorite server so far is Dallas 8, during prime time is has anywhere from 400-1000 zombies. Virginia 1 comes in close second. They are generally pretty lag free.
Also, some servers can hold up to 100 players, it's not one single server where everyone plays.

I also made a quick youtube video for anyone interested. These bastards will follow you forever.

Just figured I would add some more information, hope you guys like it.

No, it will not work with the F2P Low Resolution Arma II, sorry. It requires Arma II and Arma II: Operation Arrowhead that can be purchased together on Steam for $29.99.

You can email the dev's and request the files necessary to host a dedicated server. You will be given access to do so if you meet the proper requirements. I dont have those requirements in front of me but it was something along the lines of this:

Server 2003 or Server 2008 operating system
RDP access for the dev's to apply patches
dual core (core 2 duo or better) 2.3GHz processor
    1GB of memory
    5mbps internet connection minimum.
    Current:
    Asus Sabertooth 990FX
    AMD FX-6300 @ 4.74GHz
    16GB of Mushkin DDR-1866 RAM (8-9-8-26-1T)
    Nvidia GTX 670

Yamakasi Catleap 2B overclocked to 120Hz refresh rate
    Audio-GD FUN DAC unit w/ AD797BRZ opamps
Sennheiser PC350 headset w/ hero mod

That's one hell of a deal, although I still prefer keeping games in my Steam library.

Oh, and if you're on the fence about it, don't be. ARMA II is currently considered the 13th best PC game of all time by PC Gamer.

    Definitely worthy of your money.

3lfk1ng I wouldnt worry about the steam library. for 15bux its worth it. I'm playing it now. I must say this is unbelievable! I'm a bf2 project reality mod regular and never play anything else and I gotta say this is a breath of fresh air. I'm not really a zombie game guy. they are just too stressful and scary. I like the slow paced military squad based games like PR mod. I also have the arma2 pr mod installed. Let me know if you wanna play. I could use some pointers. What do you use? Mumble? Teamspeak? lemme know. Everyone else spend the $15 bux and get your asses in here!
especially if you have high end rigs. you will see all the eyecandy arma2 has to offer.

I haven't installed and tried Arma II for quite some time. How does it handle on more recent hardware. I want to say I last tried it on a 5870 but I may have on my 580 but I don't recall it behaving to well. I could only get so far in the single player and encountered some show stoping AI bugs that hindered any progress.
