Ivy Bridge 3770K Gaming results vs Core i7-920 at 4.2GHz

"Intel has just released brand new Ivy Bridge CPU architecture on 22nm. Although Intel has released 14 new mobile and desktop CPUs, we will focus on their flagship desktop CPU - the Core i7-3770K. "

    http://alienbabeltech.com/main/?p=29402&all=1

I found this while searching online for something similar :P

I am thinking of getting a pair of X5550 because i have a brand new EVGA Classified SR-2 which i bought earlier this year purely out of jealousy but thank fully funds ran dry and could not buy anything else other than ram :P Now since the mobo is not even opened and laying there gathering dust i was wondering if i could make it into a gaming/folding machine at a certain price.

My old AMD multi GPU folding machine is dead after a short circuit burned two cards and left one with a weird bug. That machine was never good for gaming there was microshutting and lot of performance problems. This board with a few GPU's can change that quite a bit, cant afford a array of 7970's so will have to get something else instead

at 4.2ghz they're eerily the same. in other words, everyone who bought x58 920 at launch is a fricking genius and STILL doesn't need to upgrade.

The gaming benchmarks are skewed because they're using 1333Mhz Triple channel ram on the X58 VS 1200Mhz Dual channel ram on the Z77. Ivy Bridge is starved for memory bandwidth @ those settings, whereas Nehalem can operate smoothly.

And Sandy Bridge can still clock another 10 to 20 % further even on air cooling, whereas Nehalem would have about 5 % left on high end water.

    I bought X58 I7 920 D0 at launch, but mine couldn't do 4.2 Ghz on air.

So I got an I7 980 later instead of downgrading to sandybridge

But other people don't need to do this, even 4 Ghz on an I7 920 is more than enough, I just wanted more. Every new platform since X58 has been minimal improvements for gaming, X58 is still high end.

Other than specifically CPU bound games its almost silly to prioritize CPU over GPU, more or less if you don't play MMO's you could get by fine with a Core2Quad just as well as pretty much anything and suffer only a minor performance penalty.

How did you buy an i7 920 d0 at launch? My launch spec 920 ran hot enough to fuse hydrogen at 3.8ghz, but even at 3.6ghz the 920 is more than enough for all games out today. Quite disappointed my mobo for it died.

I would have liked to see the 3570K thrown into the fray, but an interesting read none the less.

Another reason to keep the your existing X58 setup, mine works great, no need to upgrade yet.

Kept mine too, still up and running, no problems encountered since 9/09.
I'm gaming most of the time, then there's coding and 3d rendering.

Looking at the 4.2Ghz results, even in most application workloads the difference is pretty small. In more than few games, 3ch Nehalem is having a sizable lead over IB at same clock... And this is with OCed 680!

Guess I'll be riding out my x58 setups for another cycle, other than power consumption and max OC it seems to still be able to hang with the pack for the most part.

Get ready to get your mind blown:

    New EVGA Classified SR-2 = $480
    New Intel X5550 = $600
    New Mushkin Enhanced Redline 12GB 9-9-9-27 = $95

    T= $1175

Now compared to a new Z77 setup:

    New EVGA Z77 FTW = $330
    New 3770K = $350
    New Crucial Ballistix 16GB 9-9-9-27 = $190

    T= $870

So for $300 more than a 3770k you can get a pretty good gaming/folding system best of all is the CPU power compared to not only my old folding system but also to new 3770k system's.

    ajaidev,

Apples and oranges, you aren't exactly being fair in that comparison, the 3770k ain't cheap and a i7-960 costs roughly the same.

Not surprising at all really, gaming once you have overcome the scenario where the CPU might be a bottleneck becomes quite boring.
I actually think it would be more appropriate to add a parameter where max clocks on the Ivy@Air as well.

As for for example x264 multi threaded encoding where there is a bit of a difference is very interesting for us who stream in real time. However then suddenly 4 cores almost falls short at 1080p in some new games.

True but other than that 920 was and still is great. Remember that is was launched at the end of 2008. So 3.5 years and should be pretty decent for another year or even more Will SB or IB live that long? Oh, we will see

I wanted to get a 920 and a nice x58 board but it was too expensive and ddr3 prices were crazy at the time as well. i guess it was never meant for budget gamers/overclockers.

well with all the console ports out there this is no surprise. a 920 @ stock + GTX 280/4870 can still run most of the games out there @ 1080p high/max with 2xaa just fine, which is quite sad for the progress of technology.

They should have used a more stable architecture than Kepler for the comparison. Kepler drivers are a bit of a mess at the moment.

There are some oddities that we experienced with drivers and games besides with Shogun II. F1 2010 had artifacting and a couple of other games rather strangely favor the older platform. We will continue to track this as our evaluation continues this week.
