Bloomfield -> IB Worth it?

Wanting to hear some opinions on if it's worth it to upgrade from Bloomfield to IB. In doing so that means I would be upgrading the mobo and ram as well.

Current setup:
i7 920(oc 3.4)
Foxconn Bloodrage mobo
6GB ddr3 tri-channel (OCZ Plat)

What I would like to get:
i7 3770K
Z77 board(not sure yet)
Honestly, no clue on RAM. At least 16GB, possibly 32GB.

My main driver in this whole upgrade though it the RAM limitation of the foxconn board and tri-channel kits phasing out some. Anyway, will any performance boost I see be justified by the cost of this? Thanks

you do not have a SB. for a 920 it will be worth it, but do not get 32GB of ram or even 16GB, things work better with 1 stick per channel so stick with 8 as u can always change latter and u shouldnot need more.

if you are on air u may want to wait for a new batch of chips or go SB though.

It's worth it for me. Especially if you want sata3/usb3/... like I do.
Just waiting for my motherboard then I can start this new build

Why do you say to not run this chip on air?

the IB dose not have die soldered to the IHS so it runs hotter and dose not clock as high. the only real change from the SB to IB on 1155 is that the pci-e controller dose pci-e3 performance wise, so then when it dose not clock as high there is no real reason to use it when the newer boards support the improved usb3 chipset.

if you really want a bunch of ram you may want to get a socket 2011, but as of now if i were to buy i would go 1155 SB with a 7x chipset.

because he is crazy. anyone can run ivy bridge on air at 4.5ghz just like they can with sandy bridge.

I have a bloomfield and am patiently going to wait for Haswell. My trusty 3.5yr old 920 is still going strong @ 4ghz

And you are right to be honest.
You don't really need to upgrade a 920 if overclocked at 4Ghz+ (same speed as me as I switched from water to air and downclocked).
My 920 D0 gold chip is not going to waste though. It's moving to my server.
I have money to burn and I am bored of that old build too...
Anything under X58 4GHz: it's an easy choice but in our case it depends on several factors.

We saw this with the i7 920 and D0 stepping indeed but I doubt we will see big changes here even if they solder the IHS.
The gap between air and water cooling is not as big as it used to be now with coolers such as Noctua NH-D14/Phanteks PH-TC14PE.
It's been a while I stopped following the evolution of water-cooling and I am following the 3570k/3770k OC thread closely to see what people can achieve nowadays with the latest water-blocks.

Honestly, who cares? Getting close to 5 GHz is really just for e-peen. 99.9 % of people can survive on a 4 GHz Bloomfield or stock Sandy Bridge, I don't see why anyone needs a 4.9 GHz Ivy Bridge. At 4.5 GHz it should be performing close to or better than a 4.8 GHz to 5 GHz Sandy Bridge (application dependent).

Upgrading is certainly a tough decision these days, it used to be quite easy when technology leaped forward, but it now seems to be moving at a slightly slower pace.
I am still on X48 with QX9650, I am however thinking of upgrading, yet torn between Z77 and X79(D0)
Either platform will provide better performance for me, however I like to build a platform which lasts a few years (hence Rampage Extreme + QX9650) I cannot help but feel that the Z77 is awesome, yet will be shortlived. X79 should theoretically let you upgrade to something more substantial such as IB-E further down the line.

If you are overclocked to 4Ghz you might want to wait a while to see if the thermals are improved with a new(er) stepping.

Worth it, but only get 16gb RAM. If you want to make use of stuff which needs 32GB RAM then better go for 3930k as well

Wouldn't bother, 920s are still more than capable and I doubt you'd feel much of a difference in day to day use. Push your 920 to 4Ghz and save the cash or buy a new GPU instead, in my opinion.
