Windows 8 dropping DVD support

They are dropping it because they don't want to continue paying for the licensing. Not because they feel it's deprecated. At any rate... I was hoping Windows 8 would go the other way and keep DVD playback as well as add Bluray playback. Oh well.

It's also part of the cloud computing model to stream all content for a fee. Apple already started this by not including cd/DVD player in the mini. Will probably see the rest of there updated computers do the same. Wonder if VLC still be able to play a DVD.

I haven't used the DVD format to watch movies since forever, literally. Heck, even my optical drive is simply sitting there in my rig, doing nothing. Every media I use is either streamed or downloaded online. Good riddance in my opinion -- now if MS could just do the same with Metro...

there is no real reason to include the decoder with windows, windows media player should still have support for added decoders, but since amd, NV, and intel all offer a decoder with their hardware there is no point in paying for it from the OS. amd and NV should also have something for blu ray with windows 8.

also for blue ray, as of now you cannot have HD analogue in hardware or software of new products, so blu ray support would not be that great in OS.

I rip all my stuff. As long as handbrake can rip and a program will play it, I'm good to go.

In the other news!

All Windows 8 hardware will now have audio support provided by one of the most well known companies in the business. Dolby announced today it has signed a deal with Microsoft so that Windows 8 desktops, laptops and tablets will use the Dolby Digital Plus surround sound audio codec. Dolby Digital Plus will be supported for both desktop and Metro-style apps and also for Windows 8 x86 and Windows 8 ARM-based machines.

None uses DVD's anymore. Its all about media files and blu-ray. Besides there are plenty of free DVD decoders out there.

You mean they offer a software package with their hardware or it decodes at the hardware level?

Decoding is at hardware level.. you still need software to support it..

Everyone's (including me) Windows XP didn't have native DVD support either, it was all done through 3rd party software. It's really not as big a deal as people make it out to be, the awesome free options out there like VLC Player and Media Player Classic can play basically anything.

Windows 7 Starter and Home Basic were missing DVD support also. This article says purchasing the Windows 8 Media Center or Pro upgrade packs will give you media center and dvd playback.

That's a bold statement. I know plenty of people who still use DVD. All my movies (which aren't very many) are on DVD. I don't have a bluray player. And I know I'm not the only one who despises and refuses to use the cloud for my own stuff. MY stuff goes on MY hardware and MY storage, not somebody else's.

Same here. We have about 75 Bluray discs but we have close to 1000 DVDs including many TV series. We are always watching our DVDs. Most of which are watched on Media Center. We are also fans of streaming content but I won't purchase a movie that get's stored somewhere else. Watching free content on Media Center and on a Netflix subscription is about as modern as our TV watching gets.

I have a trust problem when it comes to storing MY media, as if I/anyone could trust the cloud not to charge in the future, not to mention privacy

Anyone who thinks DVD is dead needs to get out more, or consider the rest of the population (i.e not tech heads)

Not sure about US, but in AU when it comes to legitimatly watching a movie, by far the easiest most popular method for the avg person is still DVD / Bluray

Also most 'non tech heads' use a dedicated DVD player to play content, very few households are without a DVD player of some sort

I'm using windows 8 consumer preview for a while - since it is available on download.
It can open read and write to writable data DVD with no problem.
It is just new Media Player does not support dvd movies.
In turn, Windows Media Center perfectly plays DVD movies. I just checked it.
So, this thread subject is another wrong khm... khm... banana.

Whether or not people still watched DVDs on their computer (and I mean watch, not rip).....did people actually use WMP to do so? I don't think I've known anyone that's used anything but VLC or MPC since XP.

I can't really comment on the latest version of VLC (havent used it the past couple of years) but I always found windows media player provided better quality video playback than VLC. H264 performance was also a lot better in wmp. So I just stuck with using wmp for all my video playback
I use windows media center (with the mediabrowser plugin) on my HTPC too as the main player. The wmp in windows 7 comes with just about every codec and file support I need/use too. mkv file support being the only exception (which can easily be added by installing haali media splitter).
