    New build.

Hi all. New here and almost overwhelmed with all the info. Just going to post my new build/upgrade. Also have a few questions.

    Build/Upgrade

Cpu: Intel Core i7-3930K Sandy Bridge-E - Arrives Monday
MOBO: ASUS Rampage IV Extreme E-ATX - Arrives Tuesday
    Ram: 2 x G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 -Already have
    Video: 2 x XFX HD5870 XXX Sitting on 2 x Galaxy GeForce GTX 680's till mobo/cpu assembled
    HD1: 2 x Ocz Vertex 2 60g Raid 0 - Os - Already have
HD2: 2 x Western Digital Caviar Black 640GB - storage and games. Already have
PSU: XFX 1250W PRO1250W Black Edition -Already have
Case: Coolermaster Haf X EATX Tower Case -Already have
    Heatsink: Noctua NH-D14 -Already have
Cd player: LG 12X Blu Ray Re-writer Bdrw SATA Black Lightscribe 3D Playback - Arrives monday
Monitor: Acer 27in H274HL -Already have
    Keyboard: Logitech G110 -Already have
    Mouse: R.A.T 7 -Already have
Pad: Rocketfish Control/Speed pad -Already have , best mouse pad i ever owned and was cheep !

Mostly its a Mobo, Cpu and Video Card upgrade. I have a few questions.
    1. I would like a moderate OC of about 4G. Is this a reasonable goal ? or am I expecting too much?
    2. I am semi familiar with overclocking so i got the asus rampage IV E because i wanted a quality board with a lot of options. Was this a good choice ?
    3. Is the NH-D14 sufficient enough for my needs ? Always wanted water but it's a little intimidating to me.

I am a gamer and i work hard so i don't mind spending a little money ( in case u think oh man a 2600k and a mobo is 1/2 the price ). I didn't jump on the 2500-2700 band wagon because my i7 930 at 4g was doing fine. Also ivy bridge doesn't get me excited either. So i decided to go the Socket 2011 route.

    Thanks
    Mike

Looks like a nice build. The R4E is a great choice, you could do 4ghz+ with auto settings safely, wont be a problem. Your cooler should be good for the OC you are looking for with headroom to go higher if you want.

Thanks OC Nub. The cooler was worrying me. Glad to know 4G will be doable.

You have memory in the red slots?

    "Ram: 2 x G.SKILL Ares Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 240-Pin DDR3 SDRAM DDR3 1600 -Already have"

Do you have 2 kits/4 sticks?

Yes i have 2 kits. It was my fault it didn't boot, not the memory. Tore down the system and removed the heat sink. The problem was that i used too much paste and it oozed onto motherboard. Cleaned it all up. Dried it off and bam! Off to the races.
Now my issue is at stock my temps are 34-36-34-40-41-34... why are 2 cores in the 40's

One of my chip has 1 core that always reads much higher than the others. With the other chip, all core temps are within 1-2c. Dont think there is anything that can be done about that.

Check to see if you have a good mount, and are making good contact. Thats kind of warm for stock.

I'm using an NH-D14 with some MX-4 paste and am able to do 4.6ghz easy, depends on the CPU of course but I'd definitely say around 4.4ghz or so is quite easy on that cooler.

I'd vote for including the SSDs in your upgrade as well. You could pick up a pair of 120GB (or 240GB $$$ permitting) SATAIII SSDs for pretty cheap and they'd offer much better performance. Trying to cram everything on 120GB of SSD space (the total of what you have) and maintaining high performance will probably become problematic quickly.

Been very frustrated scene this build. I couldn't even get it stable at 1.25v at stock with turbo disabled. After many many hours of messing with just about everything under the sun i reset bios to safe mode, adjusted voltage to 1.25 and set memory from 1600 to 1333 and bam 40 x 100 at 1.25v no problems at all. Now i have no idea why it won't run at 1600. Tried loose timings and everything. Is it a chipset issue, ram issue or the memory controller on cpu ?

update your bios to the latest version for the R4E, I have a R4F that had very similar issues and that fixed it.

Thanks for the reply shadow. I'm currently on most current bios. Got a OC going on at 4.2 gig @ 3.125 v. I have 1 coe that reaced 73' after 7 1/2 hrs prime. Is this a good temp and oc. I basically just wanted about a 4g for every day useClick image for larger version.

Temps are fine, if you passed 7.5hrs you are good to go. I would start trying the preset profiles. If you are 4gb sticks try using the Hynix profile for 1600mhz.

temp wise you look fine, its around what mine is at most of the time depending on room ambient, however with the voltage you're giving it I expect at least 4.5ghz stable... 4.2ghz is pretty doable on just 1.25-1.275v range, and if you use offsets instead if exact vcore you can keep EIST enabled and just bump LLC up one notch from regular to High and its be perfectly stable, at least then your temps will be really low at idle thus increasing lifespan of the chip.

another suggestion maybe downloading the latest prime95 beta with AVX support as it tends to error out just a bit faster from what I've seen in cases of instability.

Doing some tweaking and benching. Getting use to this bios is a very daunting task. Sold my gtx 680's for alot more than i paied for them so i'm still using my 5870's. Cinebench was done with a 4.6 oc and vantage was done at 4.4 Running at 4.4g 1.3v. temps are idle 36-41 and load 62-66. These good scores ? Also i've decided to go to a water cooling solution. Can anyone help me with what i need. From pump, rad, houses and fittings.

Others may have better suggestions, but here's something similar to what I use.

    http://www.frozencpu.com/products/14...tl=g30c323s835

    http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/swreformcpur.html
    http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/swmc12vdcpu1.html

    http://www.sidewindercomputers.com/xsrx3xrare2.html

    http://www.frozencpu.com/products/87...tl=g30c99s1614 10ft or so

    http://www.frozencpu.com/products/69...l=g30c407s1030 4-6 of these

http://www.frozencpu.com/products/15...tl=g30c289s723 6 of these or something similar.

You'll need some 120mm fans, the XSPC rad doesnt require high rpm/cfm fans, this will help with noise.

or just buy one of these http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835181017

It should do better than your air cooler, but not as good as a custom setup.

Ok. I'll start to get parts/shipping list together tomorrow. Still nervous about water but this cpu deserves to be pushed and i want to keep it cool.
