Notably missing from the list is cheap, high-density RAM and multi-core CPUs, but this is pretty cool to think about. What were you doing in the world of computer enthusiasts 10 years ago?

10 years ago eh... :/
Don't remember much how the hardware at the time, but it was AMD's K7 probably 1700 or around there, and an ATI 9200. ^^
Other than that, Battlefield 1942 and Warcraft III
Max Payne was not dead yet either

Hmmm, 10 years ago, I was kickin' an ABIT NF7, clocking a mobile 2600 CPU & loving every minute of MOH:AA, in it's modded glory & starting BF42.
I had 4G ram & vid cards had about 256.

Exactly 10 years ago, my first PC hasn't even aged a month. It was powered by an AMD Spitfire Duron - 600Mhz iirc.
At that point of time, I don't even have an idea of what internet is - no kidding.
I have to say am very impressed on the storage size that we can have right now, and yes ofc. how fast internet connections are today.

I had the same CPU above and still have it and the MB.. But the socket was proven slow so I think I went with Celron 600 mhz..

I wouldnt have killed for an ssd 10 years ago unless it means cheaper/more reliable drives now.

about 10 years (maybe it was 9)ago i was rocking an athlon 2000 palomino(i got it from 1660mhz to 2.2ghz), an albatron with a via kt400 pro, 2x1GB of ecc ram that was 400mhz(boss back then), i picked up a SBA plat pro zs when they launched (and still use it) then in 03 i got a 9600xt. i had a beast back then.
also looking back i would have loved to have no jumpers, and no linked pci and fsb.

Lol. 10 years ago I was rocking one of the first jumper-free boards, I believe it was the ASUS P4T-E or something. It had DIP switches instead lol. Ah... Pentium 4 1.5GHZ with 384 mb of RD RAM, which was the best lol.

Great Great thread! Ten years ago I had a Athlon thoroughbred 2000XP on an SiS board, and then Nforce 2 shortly after. 1GB of ram and a Geforce 4 4200 Ti. It was all about Medal of Honor, No one Lives Forever 2, Hitman 2, GTA 3, UT2003 and then Morrowind, then the 9700pro ofcourse! Thats what got me into PC gaming. Looking back I think what I would have killed for most is affordable IPS/MVA monitors. Yeah he has the 23" Apple Cinema Displays which are still pretty usable to this day, almost gameable, but they were over two grand back then, so it was all about finding the best CRT we could, and enjoying it till it fuzzed out.
My older brother and I just got into computing. We built our first computer with amd palomino 1700+, Asus with via chip set, 2x512mb Kingston ddr266 ram and geforce mx420. I still have this machine
Where was I 10 years ago? I was 15 years old and I think I was running a P3 900 MHz and a GeForce 2 GTS. A long shot from the person I was maybe 2 years later.
Pfff. If you can't adapt to LCD then you're just a noob :p The first few days have been hard, but once you've grown accustomed to the drawbacks of LCD you can game fine. Well, maybe not Q3, but CoD worked and still works fine

10 years ago, I don't know what my PC was like--it was old and everything. But 9 years ago, I had a Celeron 2GHz with 256MB RAM & a GeForce FX 5200-128MB (AGP 4x). A generic beige chassis & power supply sufficed, a WD Caviar 80GB IDE drive, and a beige 50x CD-ROM drive. I was also rocking Windows XP Home. For years, that was sufficient--I could run BF2 (on low settings) and a bunch of other games. I remember "owning" in Delta Force BHD mulitplayer--spawning at a control point and running into the mountains, spawn-camping the hell out of the other team. I also had a Viewsonic 17" CRT monitor--a big old beast of a monitor. I ran 1024x768@75hz for a long time--towards the end, I was dissatisfied with 1024x768 & started running 1280x1024@60hz. It was a big trade-off--since CRTS of course have a refresh flicker. 60hz was easily visible, but 75hz was tougher to see.
