Rumor: AMD Wants to Buy MIPS

AMD Wants to Buy MIPS, but can they Beat Google?

    http://www.brightsideofnews.com/news...at-google.aspx

According to our sources, it looks like AMD is not done with acquisitions, and their second potential acquisition might be the second most important one they did in 20 years. While it is too early to tell were our sources misleading us (thus, take this piece with a fair grain of sea salt), the story was told to us with compeling arguments.
What do you think? At least it's worth discussing isn't it.

There has to be some really good things about MIPS, ARM used some of their IP in the latest A15-MPcore. And owning a big chunk of new patents when moving towards the mobile sector more and more is always a good thing.

The fact that they hired Goldman says a lot about how serious they are about being bought. If you look at their successes in the past few years you'll see that they've been doing much better than they had in the past and were growing revenue and shipments quite rapidly.

That might also be a major to not buy them if you're AMD. As far as we know this is merely a trend that was caused by initial popularity of tablets. Windows 8 may very well take a big bite out of that revenue, and seeing how so far word is only x86 cpus will be used someone could end up largely overpaying for them.

The problem is that AMD is getting squeezed from both ends. They're losing their low-end to ARM and they've already lost the high-end to Intel... Most of the margin is at the high end and most of the volume is at the low end. The middle is generally a byproduct of the high-end.

Great move for AMD. That's a much quicker way of getting into the mobile space than trying to develop their own chips like Intel. Plus they can get royalty for every ARM cpu sold and at the same time compete in the same space. This is the way for them to survive long term since personal computers are on the decline. Now they just need a competitive mobile gpu, none of that middle of the road Tegra stuff.
