Do you guys think replacement the VRM heatsink are necessary? Of maybe just a big fan blow straight at the stock heatsinks.

If you are talking about the MOSFET heatsinks on the Extreme4.. then yes if you can find better heatsinks it would be worth replacing them as the MOSFET heatsinks on the Extreme4 (IMO) are rather on the weedy side. The MOSFET heatsinks on the Extreme6 however are extremely good, no need to replace them at all

I wonder if the Ex4 p67/z68 asrock heatsinks would fit?

looks like i have fried the chip
    new either 2600 or 3750
where did that 1.23V come from? is it the default Vcore of the CPU at stock?

you do know that the reference Vcore changes with multiplier as well, right?

For example, at 4GHz reference Vcore might be 1.25V
But at 4.2GHz reference Vcore might be 1.275

so if you are applying the same offset Voltage, say +0.05
for 4.0GHz you would get 1.3V
but for 4.2GHz you would get 1.325V

So if 1.23V was your stock reference Vcore, if you overclock it to say 4.5GHz, it might be around 1.35V. Apply a +0.175 and you are at 1.525V.

Also, people who are using the new Z77 boards, are you seeing better overclocks at the same Vcore and settings?

From the testing I've done so far with the Z77 Extreme6 I'd say yes. 4.9GHz would appear to be stable and I can boot into Windows all the way up to 5.1GHz, maybe as high as 5.3GHz. Even taking the lowest figure that makes the 2500k 400MHz better off on the Z77 E6 compared to the P67 E4 or Z68 E4.

Currently I'm seeing how low I can get the vcore and remain stable at 4.5GHz, so far I'm at about 1.32v.

    UPDATE:

I've just submitted my first UEFI report to my Asrock contacts so you can expect the things I've noticed to be looked into in the near future. There is also a new UEFI available for the Extreme6, 1.4. You can download it HERE.

From what I can tell the MOSFET heatsinks from the P67/Z68 Extreme4 boards should fit the Z77 Extreme4 board.

    UEFI 1.4 in my testing so far is very stable. 4.5GHz @ 1.28v, 8GB G-Skill Ripjaws @ 1866 10-9-9-25 1N. Testing with the CPU & GPU @ 100% load with BOINC.

Wow those results with oc'ing 2500k on z77 are surprising, also the heatsink maybe. I may swing for a ex6 after all - there's actually quite a jump from a ex4 to ex6 in japan.

Its always good to know that you'll be around to push on Bios updates Ket.

If you are surprised by the results you have seen so far you should deffinately check out the Z77 Extreme6 review when I put it up Theres some very impressive improvements for Z77 considering most people are probably looking at Z77 as a "incremental" upgrade. Overclocking is really in a leauge of its own though - I booted into Windows @ 5GHz with such little effort the mind boggles especially as the 2500k I have struggles with 4.6GHz on the P67 and Z68 Extreme4 boards. So far with this Z77 with 1.5v on the CPU I've booted into Windows @ 5.1GHz.

UPDATE: I had to increase vcore just a smidge @ 4.5GHz but BOINC has been running for 6hrs+ now with vcore @ 1.325v (UEFI) actual is 1.3v. Pretty sweet really, 4.5GHz @ 1.3v. Pretty sure the lowest vcore I've seen for 4.5GHz on a 2500k is around the 1.25v mark.

Nah I know this 2500k like the back of my hand it needs about 1.33v for 4.5GHz so if I can get it lower than that on the Extreme6 Asrock are doing a lot right. Anyway, time for me to finish the Z77 review and stick it up.

The Extreme4 is a good board, if you can find one for a good price its well worth picking up.

Tried doing some overclocking this morning (I'm pretty familiar with Asrock's Z68 and overclocking) and using the same settings, can't get my 2500k to step down at idle, seems to keep the same speed (overclock is fine).

Ket, with your overclock, are you able to get the system to use speedstep? And if so, can you post your settings? Thanks.

/edit I figured it out, you need to have the power states as 'enabled' and not 'auto'.

I wouldn't mind seeing screenies of other's settings for their overclocks.

Toms got the first z77 roundup up. The asrock extreme6 wins in a lot of categories, 30watts less power at load than everyone else (wow!) and even highest memory clock for maxed out modules (so much for Asus T Topography), though ECS wins it out with two modules (ouch!). The temps are also lower than most boards (though i don't know how they measure it, gigabyte doesn't even have heatsinks on the top mosfets!)
