on the contrary in the winter you have your cpu giving you free heat, so it kinda just balances out. some people live in warmer areas, others live in cold areas. some pay 7c per KWH, others over 15c (my bill says 12c is what i should compare to the national average which is 11c, but after you add in the other fees its really around 16c so thats my true cost)

his math is pretty good and shows that cpu cost is probably going to severely outweigh energy costs.

Didn't watch the thread, but the title is hilarious... Yeah, Sandy's OC great on air. Super! What does that have to do with daily use (you're not gonna use your daily rig at 5.5 anyway) and what does that have to do with the fact that Ivy goes much higher then Sandy on LN2? Some guys are going to have to learn to use extreme cooling. Big deal, that's how it allways was

Question : Why do some overclockers switch into d*ckmode when money is involved

That I know, I own a box. What I was looking for was the meaning of that sentence.

I don't plan any upgrades till 14nm system-on-chip that integrates chipset and cpu on one socket. Too many socket changes and uncertainty as progress moves on. 1150 next year, then DDR4 and socket 1140 then chipset integration and socket 1160, and it will all be the same Quads with a little clock bump and lack of scalability. What is this 2500 does 400Mhz+ for each +0.1V, but ivy scales only +200Mhz and tons of heat.

    And about system tdp intel site states. i5-2550K + Z77 = 95W + 6.7W

What an excellent thread this is...........

As a basic ocker with access to subzero the IB platform has got to be good to go.........providing prices are.

......................Maybe title needs changing .............."Keep SB for a little bit"........

It's a bit of a sensationalist title, but does anyone really read a thread title and say "Oh, ok" and not buy a CPU?

I've found it very interesting and informative.

THE INCREASED TDP OF IVY BRIDGE IS A FALSE ALARM

Intel has changed the claimed heat emission level of Ivy Bridge processors. It is assumed that this was due to problem with the production of products on 22nm technology.

Assocaite reported that the processor Core i7-3770K, in spite of the claimed 95 watts is characterized by heat at 77 watts and below. One of the reasons why Intel decided to make the confusion was the desire of the manufacturer to keep the maximum TDP for the processor LGA 1155, equal to 95 watts, at the specifications level.

These measures do not allow motherboard manufacturers to produce solutions, which voltage converters are powered circuits with consumption above 77 watts (otherwise, it will reduce considerably the list of supported processors and takes a lot of inconvenience to end users). Also, some optimistic speculation credited Intel plans to release six-core processor architecture Ivy Bridge LGA 1155 with TDP 95 watts.

Don't read too much.....Get the chip and start clock it, I mean stop reading and start clocking...

Daft for anyone to switch from Sandy to Ivy unless they're on proper water +.

Clock for clock increase doesn't seem to be significant - 5% is generous it would seem. Because of that and the ease of 4.5 to 4.8 on Sandy and Ivy unlikely to deliver that as easily I don't see any reason to upgrade for normal folks. It also seems from reviews that idle watts aren't down much, which is a bit of a sad thing too.

There's no real compelling reason. Reviews seem to be lauding the graphics performance, but Sandy IGP performance was piss poor, and now it's a fractional improvement on piss poor.

Perhaps there's reason to call it a tock+ for mobile platforms, but for desktops it doesn't change the landscape.

    I'm still buying one though.

here is a shot of my clock to clock comparisons for my upcoming reviews, sure all where done on GB Z77 boards but gives you an idea of which is better for what:
