    Asus + Ivy memory treat

    If you happen to purchase ASUS for Ivy Bridge, there is also a little treat in store, as they have reworked the memory sub-system. Their new method stunned Intel engineers, but should provide distinct memory speed advantages. Simply put, instead of memory banks being read consecutively, the memory is read in parallel. We are awaiting more detail regarding how this feature works.

    I don't get it, what advantages does the Z77 bring over the 1 year old z68?

    I'd rather stay with my maximus gene for ivy, dont see why buying a new z77 mobo.

    The Panther Point chipset comes with a few additional features that may be of benefit to some users. Partially derived from the processors themselves, the chipset now supports DDR3L thanks to its power gated DDR3 interface. This is a primary benefit for the lower end processor and chipset products (that is, all things mobile), but we will see if this moves its way into the mainstream or HTPC versions of Panther Point.

    For the high-end power user, the chipset is now geared to handle memory that is more powerful. Again, thanks to the improvement on the new processors, these combined systems should be able to handle (with ease) DDR3-2800 memory. The memory dividers work similar to the gear ratios in Sandy Bridge-E, with users able to call a larger array of memory dividers than before with up to 200 MHz increments. This is of great benefit to the integrated graphics on the new generation processors, which should benefit from the purchase of a higher end memory kit to provide enough bandwidth.

    Yep, and good for 32M too...

    so if i went out and bought a board right now from asus, and used 3rd gen CPU it would be faster than other boards?

    Maybe, maybe not.

    But what I can say right here and now is that I'm 99.9% sure its BIOS will be more mature, stable and retain the potential to reach higher clock speeds (on average) than most of the competition.

    Yeah, it may sound outlandish but I'm more than willing to put my hand in the fire over this one. I went through a ton of mobos in my search for a new test system and not one of them stacked up to what ASUS brought to the table. At times, it almost felt like the other guys were about half a generation behind in terms of development.

    I won't point out which ones were the worst of the lot but let's just say that I was routinely surprised how some of the biggest names in this industry completely missed the boat on X79 AND Z68.

    I know we are at XtremeSystems, but apart from some benchmarks and world records what will this bring to the table for 24x7? Maybe DDR3-2800, and even that against DDR3-1600 is, what? 0 to 3% better performance?

    Nevertheless, it's interesting to see something different from their competition, some innovations.

    It's hardware. Layout, not addressing. Just minimises skew between slots on the same channel. Very effective for clocking with 2DPC. All ASUS Z77 boards will have this.

    this review suggests there is no performance advantage to asus z77 over z68 when used with 2500k

    well not from memory anyway virtu mvp however is showing some interesting results in benchmarks it seems to be make enough difference to 3dm11 to put gtx580 up to 7970\gtx680 performance

    So ONLY if used with all 4 RAM slots? Meaning there won't be any OC margin advantages if only using 2 out of 4 slots?

    No advantages for two DIMMs (one DPC) with T-branch: Why? As there is no slot to slot skew to account for within the channel (channel to channel skew withstanding of course).

    With DRAM prices where they are most people will be populating all four slots so it made sense for us to make the switch.

    We've worked a lot on layout and put a lot of work in for two DIMMs regardless (no BS), so there will be advantages coming in from other quarters there.
