Need server rack advice

Edit: nice work on the racks! Sheesh. Ya, now go to a home improvement store and get some screws that will thread into it, some L brackets and some plywood to build it into a 4 post shelving unit for crunchers galore. Can I store some of mine over there?

Question: How are the server racks measured? When I read "19 inch rack", where is that measured from?

A 19-inch rack is a standardized frame or enclosure for mounting multiple equipment modules. Each module has a front panel that is 19 inches (482.6 mm) wide, including edges or ears that protrude on each side which allow the module to be fastened to the rack frame with screws.

But those are for the modules. Where do I measure on the rack itself? From the screw holes?

A rack's mounting fixture consists of two parallel metal strips (also referred to as "posts" or "panel mounts") standing vertically. The posts are each 0.625 inches (15.88 mm) wide, and are separated by a gap of 17.75 inches (450.85 mm), giving an overall rack width of 19 inches (482.60 mm). The posts have holes in them at regular intervals, with both posts matching, so that each hole is part of a horizontal pair with a center-to-center distance of 18.312 inches (465.12 mm)

But the 19" is the total width. Now from center screw hole to center screw hole...I just measured a Dell PowerEdge server [19" rack mountable] and it was 19" from outside ear to ear and the center of the screw hole was roughly 3/8" in from the outside of the edge of the ear.

Ok thanks guys. These rack measure right at 20" from post to post so its safe to say these racks are standard 19" racks?
