Very nice review, good pictures and a nice product, too.

However, are you able to provide (high-res) pictures of the motherboard and/or simply just info on the chips used: LAN, SATA-controller, USB3, DOM-flash etc? The info is printed on the top of each chip: Marvell, Renesas etc.

It would also be very cool if you'd be willing to telnet into the Synology-NAS and post the configuration-file info/content.

Roughly you do this:

Enable Terminal&SSH in the Control Panel in the Synology NAS.

From Windows 7, download and use Putty or other terminal emulator.

Start Putty. Connect to the Synologys IP-adress.

Username: root
Password: your admin password

enter the following:

cd /
cd etc.defaults

ls (= shows you the content of the folder)

View/Edit the file synoinfo.conf. This can be done using the built in editor vi. Simply type:

vi synoinfo.conf

to start the editor.

A quick guide to the editor:
The vi editor has a command mode, and and input mode.
You switch to input mode by pressing the i key. When you are in input mode, everything you type in is inserted as normal into the document.
You go back into the command mode by pressing escape.
The cursor keys navigate the document.

Since you don't want to edit anything, but simply mark the text and copy it to Notepad (or directly to a reply in this thread), you simply scroll through the end of the file. When you are done copying the content of the synoinfo.conf, simply exit the vi editor by pressing Escape and keying in

:q!

followed by enter.

Fine review, nice to see that you kept it real, alot of these private/small business NAS reviews are full of crap,...

Only thing I noticed though is one of the biggest...
Apple, Dell, HP, IBM and so on, those are still the real players...

I picked one of the 212+ varrients 2 weeks ago and I've been quite happy with it. I wanted something in a small form factor that was energy effcient, quiet and didn't require a lot of setup and this fit the bill rather well Using 2 2TB Carviar Greens in Raid 1, mostly for backup and media streaming. Cheap... no but I didn't see many other alternatives in the price range. Their DSM 4.0 OS is quite slick. My only gripe is the front USB port really should have been USB3. Based on my experiance with the 212+, I'd recommend the 412 to those who can foot the bill. Link aggregation would be a great time saving feature for doing large backups.

Link aggregation only works with some managed switches and even in that case you might not see the performance improvements you'd expect.
I spent hours trying to get it working with no luck actually getting any extra performance out of the DS412+.
Admittedly this is one of the few issues I've had with it and it's otherwise a great piece of hardware from what I can tell.
