    Blu ray playback

Ok guys i finished building my HTPC, i have a E6750 core 2 duo, 4gb of ram, ati 4670 1gb video card, Viewsonic vx2753 Led monitor. I bought a Asus blu ray drive, i then downloaded Powerdvd 12, Pro theather 5 and proceeded to watch blu rays. I have to say im very very disapointed , then seem pixely, grainy, better than regular dvd, but not like blu ray i have seen. I have watched blu rays on a regular blu ray player, with a 42" samsung 1080p hd tv and they look amazing, can you get this kind of quality thru your computer blu ray player ???????

i would guess that you are lagging a bit and do not have gpu acceleration working.

i have found that using something like dvdfab to rip the disk works alot better than playing from the disk for an HTPC though since its much quieter and puts less stress on the cpu.

you dont have to keep the rip, its just a good way to test if its the player/drive or the codec (and its free for 15 days so you dont have to buy it to test). for the software try disabling gpu acceleration and make sure that speed step is disabled, and that pull down is enabled in AVECC (formerly CCC) but not in the video software.

Cant you just use VLC? It's supposed to support Blu-ray playback now. Which is nice since pretty much all the other programs that do this like the one you mention are sheit.

Support for MxPEG files, new features in the Mac OS X interface are part of this release, in addition to faster decoding and fixes for hundred of bugs and regression, notably for HLS, MKV, RAR, Ogg, Bluray discs and many other things.

Another thing, when you say it looked better on a 42", was is the same movie? (Quality from release to release can fluctuate A LOT, check quality here: http://www.blu-ray.com/ )
Was the 42" glossy and your new 27" not?
    Same equivalent viewing distance?

My blu ray drive doesnt burn, its a combo drive. Im saying when i watch blu rays at my neighbors house on his stand alone player and his 42 samsung lcd tv, it looks incrediable. I have a brand new viewsonic vx2753 led 1080p monitor, im wondering if its the monitor quality, is a 1080p hd tv going to work better ? i have watched 3 blu rays and there grainy. Can you get the same quality thru a computer as a stand alone blu ray player hooked up to a lcd tv , it dont seem like it.

vlc plays blu ray but it dose not decode it or do HDCP it has to link out to another player or an "enhanced decoder"

the easiest way to see if it is your hardware is to rip it there is no way around it being the quickest way to make sure that you are seeing the top quality video with normal codecs, if that gets you good quality then you need to find the settings.

Ok, works fine for me, got both video and sound. Can't complain. =)

To get it to work, tiny guide:
    http://vlc-bluray.whoknowsmy.name/

The first file should be in (If the aacs folder dont exist, then create it):
    C:\Users\<Your user>\AppData\Roaming\aacs

The other file shall be in the VLC directory, if you have a VLC in the "program file X86" folder then choose the 32 bit file, if not then you should choose the 64 bit file.

Opening the media in VLC requires you to physically choose Blu-ray in the "open disc" menu. Also tag the "no disc menu" square. It would't work for me if I did't. (At least not on the Dark Knight Blu-ray release.)

Proof of working just fine, looks amazing, too sharp for my tastes on a 24" IPS monitor 80cm away:
    http://kirkedam.mine.nu/kwk/Diverse/...tTestImage.png

Which blu-ray movies did you try out? I have quite a few BD's on my shelf so I can with some luck maybe try the same, so we can compare outputs =)

i just use my ps3 for blu ray since i dont have a drive, all of my knowledge on this comes from installing HTPC and winging tech support but ive done it enough that its normally the hardware is not enough (dose not seam to be the problem) the drivers are set up wrong, the software is trying to use the wrong gpu acceleration, or the blu ray drive is doing something strange since its blu ray protection needs to be updated with a newer disk/firmware or it needs to have flag over rides.

i had tried VLC last year and it was hacky to make it play blu rays and i needed what i think was cini player to work. powerDVD through windows media player is what i think the most stable one i had found, but since ripping is so much easier i just recommend that now since for HTPC most people have a blu ray player then the HTPC (but they are being replaced by roku now so i have not had any to do for a while)

neo - I have a 2yr old? or so Samsung BD player (7.1 analog) set top box in one room but prefer the BD player in the computer (PDVD10U) because it is much faster and does 3D. Couple of movies look like regular DVD that was recorded on a BD because they probably were haha. All the recent movies (last 2 years) look great and in 3D too. Probably just some setting in PDVD12 that needs adjusting.

I have the viewsonic vx2753 led, its a 27 inch led 1080p monitor, it looks pretty good, i want to know what is the ultimate display to have. What is going to give me the best picture possiable for blu rays, and hd tv ? is it a ips monitor with higher resolution ? or a really good quality 1080p hd tv ??????? any recommendations ? around 32 inch.

While you can play BluRays with an AMD 5xxx card it mostly uses the cpu to do all the work. 6xxx and newer cards use the gpu for most of the work lowering cpu usage considerably. LG made a killer 32" LED edge lit HDTV with an Alpha IPS panel couple of years ago. It can browse YouTube using the remote to type like texting on a phone.
