The RAM for the 3770K? Maybe an upgrade from my XMS3 PC-16000 2000CL9 RAM... but I'll think my Corsair manage fine with Ivy.

How big of a role does mhz on ram play out in games? is a combination of good timings and mhz what someone should aim for? or just focus on mhz. Sorry for random question.

Makes a very small difference either way to be honest.

Just try keep a mix of good timings and mhz (:

omg last time i was specifically overclocking ram was with bh5 258 2-2-2-5-1 . 1489 11-13-13-35-2 i will continue to push cpu and make ram just try to catch it. these numbers makes me think it is taking much much more time and effort to push ram to max.

When i'm being paid i always do my job through.

It makes a noticable difference in games, but its not significant, like 2-3 fps at the most. Always prioritise raw CPU and GPU performance first, then if you don't already have one get a fast SSD before thinking about spending an excessive amount on ram.

Faster ram is worth buying at small price differences of around $20 for better stuff, but brands like G Skill and Corsair will charge up to $100s extra premium for the highest spec ram, which isn't worth it for gaming.

I found that my performance significantly dropped when changing from my 12 gb cas 6 1700 MHz / cas 7 1866 Mhz capable ram to cas 9 1600 Mhz 24 gb, and I ended up going back to using my 2 Gb modules. Maximum ram frequencies are also limited by memory controller, I.e. This superfast ram will work well on X79, but it would still struggle to reach 2000 Mhz on X58.

I would have to be able to reach 2200 MHz on cas 9 at least to see any noticable improvement from my current ram, which just won't happen on my X58 setup as my 2 Gb modules are actually capable of that, but won't even run stable at 2000 Mhz cas 11 with just 3 modules installed. So lower frequencies at tighter timings is better for me, and I already have some of the best ram for that but on 2 Gb modules.

I've been through lots of ram kits between P35, X48 and X58 and learned that they simply are not worth the price tag for higher end stuff, but you can usually get cheap dimms that overclock very well if you keep your eyes open and search for it.

it is a badass kit, more suited for LGA1155 than LGA2011 if you ask me, but then again maybe when Ivy-E comes it will be better suited for LGA2011.

Then again if buying an X79 setup, I wouldn't limit myself to slow 1600 MHz ram, but I wouldn't buy expensive Gskills either. Id get those cheap half height Samsung modules that are currently available that can reach 2400 mhz which is more than enough.

But for enthusiasts, benchers, or people with plenty of money to burn, 3000 Mhz ram is a very nice extra toy to spend their money on. Id sure like to have such an X79 setup to play with, but I made the decision to skip SB and IB until whatever comes after that because X58 and an I7 980 is still beyond what I will need even in 3 years time.

The difference between 1600 cas 9 and 3000 cas 10 would be much more significant, Id imagine around 6-10 fps.
