Based from Crysis:W(still one of my baselines), Skyrim, and Civ. 5 benchies @ stock; 7870 is a winner.
Plus, its easy to factor in the OC headroom, power saving feature(if you care); and yes of course, how will Kepler affect the cards' prices.....soon.

    From Tom's
Unfortunately, although we’re able to talk about the performance of Radeon HD 7870 and 7850, you won’t be able to buy the card until at least March 19th, AMD tells us. The company says that, because CeBIT and the Game Developers Conference fall so close to the official launch, it’d be difficult to keep information about the cards under wraps. Regardless of the explanation, it sucks to wait another two weeks for street pricing and a better feel for availability.

Unlike some others, I have heard sometime AFTER March 19th from various board partners. Hopefully that changes between now and the 19th.

Good performance but overpriced like the rest of 7xxx cards are, hope Nvidia gets their ass in gear and releases Kepler already, that should hopefully bring the price down to a more sensible level.

I'm hoping Keplar is competitive enough to bring these into the 250 to 275 range. Although the efficiency improvements are nice the fact it performs similarly to something we had a year ago and at the same price point at that... not exactly amazing. In otherwords theres been no progress in the price to performance proposition of these cards. Stale market is da badz. We needs us moar competitionz nao!~

The 7870 seems to be a real winner. Now the thing that confuses me though is the scaling. GCN seems to be a hell of a lot more efficient than VLIW4 even, but for some reason the 7970 only performs 30% better despite having 50% more shaders. Something doesn't add up imo. Either the 7970 is underperforming for driver reasons (not being able to take full advantage of all the processing power) or it is being handicapped by the 32 ROPs

Definitely faster overall. There are a few games where 580 performs ~10% or so better, but they are exceptions. OCs on the 7870 are in the ~15-20% range, depending on the sample in different reviews. The card is @ stock around 5% slower than GTX580 on average,so OCed by ~15% (which is what most people will get on stock Volts) it will be faster than 580 for sure.

At their current prices, I'm not impressed.

If it had launched for $50 less than their MSRP, I'd have a 7870 tomorrow. Even with Kepler on it's way, I'd still get Kep and just put the 7870 in my woman's rig I'm presently putting together from various parts (she only plays WoW, so she doesn't need an ultra high-end rig). AMD would've had me at hello if they had merely priced themselves accordingly. Midrange should be the $150-$300 bracket, and they missed that mark for me.

Still, not a bad card, just a bit over-priced like the rest of the 7 series has been.

That'll be too late for me sadly enough. If Kepler is better (and I heavily doubt it won't be) then I'm going to skip straight to it and just put my current GTX460 in her system. The only game that she plays is WoW, so realistically a 7870 is overkill. Just thought it'd be fun to play with.

My bday is march 7th, my woman was going to buy me a new card for my bday. As it stands now, she's going to instead get me a gift card for microcenter for the cost of one and let me pick what I want. I like the performance of the 7870, but at that price I just can't jump on it. If I'm spending $300+ I'll wait to see what's got the big dog in the bracket.

Not to be the devils advocate, but what stops nvidia from overpricing kepler just like amd is doing with the 7xxx series? point simply being that nvidia won't miss a chance for some cash, they are a business after all and not a charity, so I wouldn't count too much on prices dropping soon or by much.
