Japan's largest chipmaker Elpida files for bankruptcy protection

Japan’s largest microchipmaker Elpida Memory filed for bankruptcy protection Monday, days after it admitted it was struggling to solve its debt problems.

Buy your RAM today cause the prices might go up a bit.
Cause the other big guys on the market will probably use this to make more money.

I don't doubt for a second if memory prices skyrocket.

"Then again, there is a possibility that Elpida could go the way of Japan Air Lines (JAL), which entered bankrupcy, reorganized the company, exited bankrupcy after 14 months and is now considered a turnaround company in the airline business."

    ^Lets hope this!^

I might start looking for upgrade ram now, even if not needed for 6mo. prices real good now.

there is still micron and the taiwan cartel and we have overproduction so prices should not change for bulk memory. whats killing the market IMO is that ram is a commodity and not a product, the same thing is what hurts the lcd market and lets crap like TN monitors, and tvs with forced overscan and non independent backlight/brightness settings. if elpida would have gotten a piece of that hyper IC market i bet that those chips would still be made and they would have had enough market to keep some fab time dedicated only to better profit chips.

You must have been watching soccer or something while the flooding in Thailand went on because that tragedy engulfed more than one HDD, HDD-parts company!

no, because some people expect prices to skyrocket and therefore hastly buy lots of ram, which increases the chance of a ram shortage and probably leads to higher prices. therefore people who expect high prices are the ones who indeed cause them in the end

that's how the stock exchange market works. if there was no news about elpida being bankrupt we probably wouldn't notice ANYTHING at all
