AMD Grabbed GPU Market Share from Nvidia, Intel in Q4

There are several interesting takeaways from the latest graphics chip shipments and suppliers' market share data from Jon Peddie Research (JPR). The first one is that Intel continues to dominate the field with a demanding 59.1 percent share of the market, down from 60.4 percent sequentially but up from 52.5 percent one year prior. Intel's dominance is a testament to the concept of integrated graphics, which is an area NVIDIA ditched to focus on discrete graphics.

Desktop discrete graphics is the real deal for us. Who cares about crappy IGP ?

well there is a vast part of the market who are happy with desktop IGP, although this in XS does not bode well, since we're all hardware enthusiast.

While AMD gets the lions share of mobile discrete Nvidia gets the lions share of desktop discrete, overall market share for Nvidia will definitely be lower and dropping considering they are phasing out integrated solutions for x86.

As for marketshare Intel rules them all, really not something worth making allot of noise over.

    Q4 graphics shipments increased 8.9%

    February 23rd 2012
Jon Peddie Research has released its latest edition of MarketWatch. AMD's overall graphics market share increased 1,8% from last quarter due mostly to HPU shipments.Intel continues to be the overall market share leader, elevated by Core i5 EPG CPUs, Sandy Bridge, and Pineview Atom sales for Netbooks. Nvidia showed good desktop discrete market share gain (3.7% qtr-qtr), and 0.1% in notebooks.

NVIDIA's gains are all in the mobile handheld market, where AMD has zero competitors. In addition, workstation class products look to be 87% market share for NVIDIA (which is no surprise considering AMD's utter lack of support for that market).

Also, in terms of DISCRETE GPU market share, NVIDIA was up 3.7%.

It will be interesting to see the Q1 2012 numbers. If AMD doesn't rise significantly, then the HD 7000-series could be initially considered a sales disappointment.

Do $500+ graphics cards make up that much of the marketshare?

No, but $175 and lower graphics cards do.

Yeah, I can't see 7770 doing well in the retail market. Do you think that it will even be a popular oem card?

Not likely. I have talked to quite a few retailers and the general off the record feedback is that even the major ones have sold no more cards than can be counted on two hands.

perhaps if the 7770 wasn't competing directly with earlier generation models in the same price range from the same manufacturer, it would have a chance to take off...

I think HD7770 needs to be priced at around $120 or so, not $160

how do most customers end up picking a graphics card? do they just shop for the highest number card at a specific price? do store reps push specific products? do people just buy cards in recommended budget builds? or is it forums that have the most weight? cause i personally haven't noticed any tv commercials advertising cards.

No idea about US or any other country, but in India, its mostly the user budget and the brick and mortar shopkeeper who decide which card the user would take home. Though people researching a bit online before making the purchase is increasing everyday but still I guess is an insignificant number
