I am playing with 2 6990 and it works fine.from two to 4 cards i get almost ideal 2x scaling .
It crashed sometimes, but a reboot was enough. They are both watercooled.
I am using 11.12 . 12.1 don't let me boot once installed. I didn't try installing drivers before with one card and then adding the other, but since i also get lower scores with 12.1 i got back to 11.12. I don't use 3d so i don't need crossfire support for 3d of 12.1. In heaven i also get higher scores with 11.12 .
    I don't have cap installed

Last night while finishing the last 2 cards with blocks..I was wondering why my 2nd card was hotter then my first.. here i find out after taking the stock heatsink off that the damn goop was done poorly and it looked like it baked the goop right on the core. The freakin goop was not gooy like the norm as it was on the other 3 cards. It was freakin hard and crusted up like it was cooked! Freakin crazy! Plus it was on the card (last card) that i installed that i got from newegg that has the least voltage of all of them at 1.049v! (norm 1.174v.). So here at less voltage the thing was hotter then the first card which is doing more work then the other 3 for eyefinity!

Glad i put water blocks on the cards now to catch that issue before it cooked the card!

At least I know why I abandoned my QuadFire builds back with the 4870X2; Driver support was like finding Nessy, and it just didnt gain that much in games. More for the benchmark junkies

Have you tried using RadeonPRO to set a custom profile with 1x1 optimized crossfire or something of that nature?

Sorry i never got back with you guys.. Heard the last patch for BF3 broke Quadfire. Runing the Karkand expansion game runs totally fine using QuadFire though, its jus tthe normal MP BF3 maps that cause the crashes either instantly or 30 secs in.

Hopefully they fix it in the next patch or Ati fixes it in there next drivers.

Either way i can either change the crossfire mode to 3 from 4 in the control panel or just play Karkand maps and play BF3 fine for now in the mean time.

Wow, that's just incredible. If you don't mind, what res and what settings are you running BF3 in and what frame rate. That is one stunning looking PC. I'm jealous.

61xx x 1080 120hz w/ Ultra with everything on maxed out everything! 3 seems to scale better then 4.. and wow what a difference when overclocked to 1200Mhz and 1600Mhz on the ram. Metro 64 player server maxed with just 3 cards the frame rate is 90% of the time well above 100 fps. Sometimes dips in the upper 90s with highs in the upper 140+ range! Outdoor maps like Karkand 64 player maps its in the 70-100+ range but seems smooth.

All the cards are at 98-99% most of the time with tri-fire. Noticed tonight with Quadfire that on the Karkand maps alot of the time its in the upper 70-low 90% usage range for the cards.

Cant wait for the offical drivers to come out to see if it will fix quad cards as i really cant use them currently in BF3. If not i'll sell off a card and block and have fun with 3 7970s.

Crossfire 7970's is more than enough. Spend the extra money on some nice monitors:

I personally prefer having just three monitors as the bezels completely disappear into your periphery vision when playing games (you have to see it to believe it). Five just has too many vertical lines in your immediate FOV, but one cannot help but be impressed by it.

Wish I could select 3 again mate, I currenyly have 2x6990's and it's obviously either 2 or 4 GPU's very very annoying and I suffer the same problems. emailed AMD, ut expect the usual brushoff.

    Huumm. Strange.

    I'm also using 4X 7970 + 3930k + Rampage IV with 3X 30'' LCDs Eyefinity and both Metro 2033 and BF3 are working fine.

Can't tell you what your problem is, but at least you know there is a problem somewhere in your system since mine is running fine with the same parts.

But in Metro 2033, the 4th card is not doing anything. The built-in benchmarks is giving the same result with Tri-Fire and Quad-Fire. But it's not crashing. It's working fine. So probably a CAP problem.

What size on 5 monitors? I would think 5 30" monitors in portrait would be a nice compromise between wrap around and bezel spacing. Does 5x1 portrait even work in eyefinity is the next question I suppose.
