So we shouldn't hope for another K7 or K8 from AMD any more

It doesn't mean that AMD won't have some good designs, but it doesn't appear that performance (in the sense that we typically conceive of it, namely, single-threaded brute force) will be a primary concern or goal. It only has to be good enough, potentially targeting specific applications versus all-around utility. With the focus on cloud, I imagine VM/DB performance will become a primary concern.

Ya i know first there was single topic at anandtech then another and another kept coming up and i made quite a few threads as a result. So since i cant del the old threads copy-pasted the info now all seems good except there are three "Delete me threads" on XS news section

Interesting, the trinity follow up will be made on 28nm instead of 32nm, the same goes for the other desktop parts.

No 10-core desktop FX CPU this year or next, no "Steamroller" based FX CPUs in 2013 either. Seems like Vishera (4-8 Piledriver cores) will go against both Ivy Bridge and Haswell CPUs.

Nothing about clock per clock speed? using that slow chips which can't even get sub 10s 1m below 8ghz today on 1-2 ghz mobile?!
I prefer something with "Intel inside" then in ANY device...

There is no doubt that Bulldozer doesn't have enough IPC at the moment for desktop crowd to drool over, but using super pi as a benchmark of how fast or efficient one design can be is ludicrous(no offense).
I can assure you that AMD won't have a chip with SB-like ST performance in a good while(maybe next 3 or even 4 years). By that time the focus from improving ST performance will be long gone and I doubt that whatever intel has will be much faster than haswell(per thread). You may see minor boosts due to expanding structures within a core, but intel will also focus on heterogeneous computing with many "specialized" smaller cores doing some tasks many many times faster than legacy x86 could ever dream of(think intel "quick sync").

Of course we'll see it "at some point", but AMD's roadmap shows no Steamroller FX in 2013, maybe 2014? I'm keeping my Thuban "3D rendering" rig for now.

I think they will stick to yearly cadence when desktop performance is in question too. So at some point in 2013,probably Q3,we may see a new socket+chipset with a new Steamroller based FX parts(what Komodo was supposed to be before it got scrapped). 28nm and 10 cores with IPC+clock improvements over Vishera is not bad and can help them compete in performance segment. We even know how much they expect from Steamroller, the same as from BD->PD (10-15%,same core count;figure in 1.25x for MT workloads due to 10 vs 8 threads and you end u with 1.4x+ improvement as a best case scenario in multithread aware programs). What is unknown is whether Steamroller will support AVX2 (I think yes) and whether AMD will expand FMAC units to 256bits (hard to do).

huh wow if they are able to follow through on this...well it would be a huge win? i mean they could leave intel in their dust if by 2014 their goals have been met? these solutions seem to be targeting massive profit and specialized tasks. as for sb like performance, i am sure piledriver will bring it (lol it cant get worse right?).

I think the first step towards understanding is really believing that intel isn't relevant to AMD's success. AMD has a whole lot of tech, expertise and IP that intel wishes they had. The best thing for AMD is to forget about intel and get on with being their own business.

Too bad AMD isn't alone in going low power and laptops. Intel already has the performance and soon will have the power consumption benefits too thanks to a more advanced process node. AMD can only compete in budget category products, and even that's going to be difficult.

Competition is never a bad thing for costumers... the more competitors the better.

Predictions, predictions, predictions. As a rule of thumb I'll subtract 50% of the improvements you predict. An secondly, the 10 core products seem to have disappeared from the roadmaps. We're down to 3-5% IPC and 5% process for a grand total of 10% improvement with BD 2nd generation vs. the 1st one.

dont worry, jf-amd is posting over at amd zone and is now saying that less faster cores is a better way.

Absolutely. Do you think they'd rather have AMD's driver team or their own? Or Brazos compared to Atom? Or any kind of discrete-graphics capability? Or a 17W ultrathin quad core with playable gaming and better battery life?

Intel revenue for 2012 topped 50B $ . Imagine how much more it would have been with everything you mention.
